Historic Walking Area Religious Site
Head up the mountain to find Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple, a Tendai Buddhist monastery acting as the headquarters of the Tendai sect, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 788 CE, the monastery's founding father, Saicho, was responsible for introducing the Tendai sect to Japan, and many other influential monks have studied here. Involved in many of the power struggles that defined feudal Japan, the buildings were destroyed in 1571, with most of the current buildings dating back to the early Edo period.
