Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple, Otsu

Head up the mountain to find Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple, a Tendai Buddhist monastery acting as the headquarters of the Tendai sect, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 788 CE, the monastery's founding father, Saicho, was responsible for introducing the Tendai sect to Japan, and many other influential monks have studied here. Involved in many of the power struggles that defined feudal Japan, the buildings were destroyed in 1571, with most of the current buildings dating back to the early Edo period. Aboard the bullet train in August from 6 son and first close, went by train from Kyoto station (time on the bus for the son was "iron" so choose dare train). Along the way, Sakamoto station take bus station cable Sakamoto cable car from Mt. Hiei. You'll get cable Enryaku-ji Temple and the temperature is going down. View overlooking Lake Biwa, is feeling good. 10 minutes walk to the road at the entrance of Mt. Hiei and the shop and konpon chudo. Hall was under construction during the root, is that you can. You could see so much no one slowly. Root in Temple after visit to one building. Wide pants near the stairs up and down vertically, so step is difficult to see is not recommended (see feet, clinging to the feet when you go up and down, very). I have a lot of votive picture of passing prayer. Then the Yokogawa during visit to Yokogawa by shuttle bus. Because it came up here in the next Tower became carryover to the next. Or ask the way, talk to some monk said was talking, ladies and gentlemen, in friendly, fun people was still impressive. Room cool much more than expected and also forget the heat of the summer so far.

From demachiyanagi station in Kyoto eizan electric railway cables, aerial tramway, the climb to Mt. Hiei. 800 M Summit was refreshing. Head temple Enryakuji Temple saicho opens 1200 years ago. Historic main hall and Auditorium buildings exist as a place of prayer and ascetic practices. Method Honen and Shinran, Eisai and dogen, and was trained in the Hiei mountains are all big names in Japan Buddhism, Nichiren was surprised by it. East Tower and West Tower area, Yokogawa area divided into three, each had atmosphere. Using bus day ticket (¥ 800) on the move, it was useful.

Evening going to Enryaku-ji, is a direct bus from Kyoto station, and could go in the JR Kosei line and the Sakamoto cable car (JAF discount included). However, in summer until 16:30 (admission until 16:), so consider going up the slope from the cable station could end up ahead of time to go. That winter is 30 minutes early even with the (good to go in the morning). In a matter of hours we visited only during construction of the main building. Going into the main hall, stifling more heavy air enveloped. I don't know hard training in recent years, but at least strict training in the past once is makes you feel.

Where to stay in Otsu

You'll find a scattered few accommodations across Otsu, primarily close to Otsu train station. The options located in this area tend to be fairly standard hotels, designed for businesspeople rather than tourists, with simple rooms, pools, and onsite restaurants. Closer to the lake, things get a little more interesting, with some more traditional guesthouses to choose from. Going anti-clockwise round the lake, you'll find some clusters of accommodations close to the primary attractions, such as hot springs. Then again, you can always stay in Kyoto and take a day visit to Otsu.
