Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple, Otsu

Head up the mountain to find Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple, a Tendai Buddhist monastery acting as the headquarters of the Tendai sect, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 788 CE, the monastery's founding father, Saicho, was responsible for introducing the Tendai sect to Japan, and many other influential monks have studied here. Involved in many of the power struggles that defined feudal Japan, the buildings were destroyed in 1571, with most of the current buildings dating back to the early Edo period. Put Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple into our Otsu trip itinerary builder site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • To and prayed. To go from demachiyanagi, Hiei mountain railway via the ropeway. Waited quite enough investigators to begin aerial tramway. Back down on the Biwa Lake in the Sakamoto cable and went with JR. Long distance walk from Keihan station until JR from the cable station, taxi-way correct. It is less than 1,000 yen. Enryakuji temple itself is the West Tower East Tower, Sweety thanks, Yokogawa's divided into 3 districts with glue. We didn't enjoy so much foliage is the mid-11 did not go to Yokogawa in rainy, doing a fall foliage Festival, a little away from you, but. The Shaka Hall's Tower District. Saicho's own Buddha image is enshrined. Devas was being moved to the Museum is valuable, but your company first published four (oyashiro) (Manjusri, three nurses, seven, 八所 shrine), is very interesting. Next time I want to come in overnight in summer.

  • We visited Mt. Hiei Enryakuji Temple I wanted to go. Went to demachiyanagi station from eizan line, cable, cable car, and bus got off on Enryakuji, Enryaku-ji Temple ticket office is located. Go is like the training really sorry to hear that. I was a tourist destination and enters the Enryaku-ji Temple world heritage site seems in a solemn atmosphere. You could enter in the root in the treasure Hall is unfortunately seen in renovation building is. Temple tradition that during the Buddhist statues and sutras, but really it was. Of what it feels are better trained here. To climb the building known as monju would root around through the Hall and up the long stairs, so wasn't really steep stairs were in 1 pain cold. Back rode in the Sakamoto cable car. It was a tourist destination well lasting memories.

Where to stay in Otsu

You'll find a scattered few accommodations across Otsu, primarily close to Otsu train station. The options located in this area tend to be fairly standard hotels, designed for businesspeople rather than tourists, with simple rooms, pools, and onsite restaurants. Closer to the lake, things get a little more interesting, with some more traditional guesthouses to choose from. Going anti-clockwise round the lake, you'll find some clusters of accommodations close to the primary attractions, such as hot springs. Then again, you can always stay in Kyoto and take a day visit to Otsu.
