Tennoji Zoo, Osaka

(500+ reviews on the web)
Playground
Only the third zoo to open in Japan, Tennoji Zoo shelters 230 species spread across an expanse of 11 hectares (27 acres). Established in 1915, the zoo and the adjacent "Savannah Zones" create an illusion that both carnivorous and herbivorous animals share the same enclosure. The animal park also includes a reptile house, hippo and rhino house, and an exhibit called the "Asian Tropical Rainforest Zone." Put Tennoji Zoo and other Osaka attractions into our Osaka vacation generator, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Tennoji Zoo is a well maintained zoo. Its worth a visit not only for kids but also adults. It free if you take the Osaka Pass. It was crowded but we enjoyed our visit.  more »

  • I was highly disappointed by this zoo. The only thing I can say in its favor is that admission is very cheap, but even 500 yen is too much for this. The zoo itself is tiny and extraordinarily crowded, with little room for navigation and narrow walkways. There's few places to sit down and even exhibits where one can pet the animals require passerby to keep moving forward on a single column. The conditions the animals are kept in is abhorrent. The enclosures are highly cramped and exposed to the elements, and there is very little space separating the animals from viewers. The polar bear in particular was heartbreaking. It seemed to be extraordinarily stressed, and between the heat of the sun and the massive crowds it isn't hard to see why. All in all, a dirty, crowded a unpleasant experience that will leave you feeling guilty for even taking part in it. Avoid at all costs.
  • It's was so late evening when touch down this Tennoji Zoo, almost close. yet still experiencing the giraffe which they put indoor... its brilliant!!! So Asian, destination spot surrounded by small shops and food stall...
  • I came here because it was part of the Amazing Pass. While the selection of animals is pretty good for the size of the zoo, the enclosures are much too small for most of the animals, especially the feline section. Many of the animals pace back and forth, the ground well worn with their paths. The zoo has a very dated feel to it. I wouldn't recommend this particular zoo.
  • I agree with everything that everyone has said on here. I came here because of the Osaka amazing pass. But after experiencing it , I deeply regretted coming. I was never a believer/supporter of zoos. Animals should be left in the wild not in captivity. Seeing the animals at this zoo makes you realize how sad it is and how this problem should be addressed. The penguins and polar bears for example, were kept in small cages outside with fake snow. A few of the penguins were also bald from plucking their hair out from being stressed. I would recommend more people writing reviews to raise awareness to this problem.
  • AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! Take that entry fee and donate it to a animal charity, that would do a lot more good than this disgrace of a Zoo. Most of the animals looked very stressed and underfed, constantly walking in circles or pacing back and forth in it's small enclosure. The Polar Bear and Penguins in particular were easy enough to see the lack of care and maintainence that goes on here, with white painted concrete in the sun, green water and at that, not enough water and definitely no ice! Most of the animals don't have a friend and you can clearly see that they are stressed and have lost their minds. I feel very very awful for even contributing to this. Please do not go to this place and take action to shut this down!
