Tennoji Zoo, Osaka

3.0
Only the third zoo to open in Japan, Tennoji Zoo shelters 230 species spread across an expanse of 11 hectares (27 acres). Established in 1915, the zoo and the adjacent "Savannah Zones" create an illusion that both carnivorous and herbivorous animals share the same enclosure. The animal park also includes a reptile house, hippo and rhino house, and an exhibit called the "Asian Tropical Rainforest Zone." I din't know why I missed to come over here two years ago. The small entry fee was really worth the money. You got to see a lot of different animals. You also stood not so far away from them. The map p...  more »

Admission adult 500 yen and instant, so can enjoy 10 minutes is satisfactory, there mosquito in the summer! Bites hands and especially to break something in the tree-shaded benches makurimasu. Such repellent is safe. Animals, summer is hot and tired feeling so cool season is a little bit active may become.

More than anything else I was impressed by the dedication of the staff and management of the zoo. It seemed as if they were determined to showcase the animals and their zoo the best they could. I've been to some terrible zoos (think south America) with cramped, dirty enclosures and disinterested staff, but there was none of that here. The zoo is obviously working within a budget however it's clean, the animals seem engaged & the staff are enthusiastic, whether it's conducting a show or entertaining kids. It should also be said also that the cost of entry is just Y500 yen - super reasonable.

This zoo is very unique as it lies in the middle of Osaka. Towards its periphery you can see roads and buildings. Zoo in town concept. The security is very good. Just imagine if a lion escapes to town! Some of the exhibits are placed underground. The animals are well fed, in fact some are obese. Most animals are very clean. The hippo is in clear water. There is a section where you can see it under-water. The big cats are very clean indeed. You can see this zoo from Tsutenkaku Tower. The avian section is closed. In front of the zoo is Shinsekai shopping area.

I was highly disappointed by this zoo. The only thing I can say in its favor is that admission is very cheap, but even 500 yen is too much for this. The zoo itself is tiny and extraordinarily crowded, with little room for navigation and narrow walkways. There's few places to sit down and even exhibits where one can pet the animals require passerby to keep moving forward on a single column. The conditions the animals are kept in is abhorrent. The enclosures are highly cramped and exposed to the elements, and there is very little space separating the animals from viewers. The polar bear in particular was heartbreaking. It seemed to be extraordinarily stressed, and between the heat of the sun and the massive crowds it isn't hard to see why. All in all, a dirty, crowded a unpleasant experience that will leave you feeling guilty for even taking part in it. Avoid at all costs.

Nice zoo. It's not so large but with reasonable space for each animal who lives here. Also it is clean and all animals have been taking care very well.

Where to stay in Osaka

The majority of Osaka's moderate and expensive accommodations concentrate in the districts of Umeda, Kyobashi, Namba, and Shin-Osaka. Base your stay in or near Minami neighborhood for proximity to a wide selection of shopping and dining options. For quick access to long-distance transportation to other cities and areas, look for hotels in Kita district. Many backpackers prefer the budget options in the Tennoji area, where the quality of rooms and prices vary wildly--call or check websites of specific establishments before you make reservations.
