Tennoji Zoo, Osaka
(3/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
Only the third zoo to open in Japan, Tennoji Zoo shelters 230 species spread across an expanse of 11 hectares (27 acres). Established in 1915, the zoo and the adjacent "Savannah Zones" create an illusion that both carnivorous and herbivorous animals share the same enclosure. The animal park also includes a reptile house, hippo and rhino house, and an exhibit called the "Asian Tropical Rainforest Zone." Put Tennoji Zoo and other Osaka attractions into our Osaka vacation generator, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Is Japan's largest Zoo, because more species are often thought surprising and compact. But Kiwi eye looked better than I thought, but often in front of the exhibition hall, but at the bottom of the glass is dirty and hard to see. Get more cleaning the glass if not to stress for the birds, and I'm happy. Of nocturnal owls are both bad state. Increases the overall new exhibit is Sara part is outdated. Finely woven eyes, I couldn't see very well, sorry. I wanted to see better drill. To allow photos of Koala was stumped. Flash doesn't help as well, may I take a photo as is...? In ordinary zoos elsewhere, I'm taking it. I had something negative?

  • I went to the zoo mainly because I was curious why everyone was throwing bad reviews here on the zoo.. and I have to admit that they are right. The zoo perimiter is quite big and they have a good sele...  more »
  • It is a zoo. The setting is correct. However most of the animals are only in small sites. Some rotate continuously and give an impression of madness. Clearly most aren't happy, yet the staff feed them properly. I think it's the loneliness and some in very small spaces.

  • The workers and managers should be put into such a cage as they should be ashamed. The animals are unkempt, disturbed. No type of revenge. Which is such a modern country as Japan, so lest is incomprehensible to me. My eyes should close the zoo immediately. The animals are not a thing they all have feelings. And all who say that the zoo is beautiful and give five stars you all have no embarrassed you.
  • I'm not an expert on animals but anyone can clearly see that most of the animals are not treated well. I couldn't even bring myself to take pictures as they looked liked they were suffering inside their little cages/enclosure. Especially the bears. The polar bear's hair was soo thinned out his whole back was hairless. The other bears were undoubtedly under extreme stress and looked mentally unstable as they just kept going round and roind in circles. Seeing them just broke my heart. It wasn't just the bears that looked stressed in those deplorable conditions but almost all the other animals as well. Their main attraction was probably the tigers, lions and savanah animals since they looked properly fed compared to the other animals. If you love animals just skip this place on your itinerary.
  • This zoo is horribly managed and the animals are neglected--sick, underfed, stressed. Anybody who gives this zoo 3 to 5 stars has zero empathy, and is somehow capable of turning a blind eye to the horrible living conditions of the animals for the sake of entertainment. Yes, you get to see a tiger up close--it's old and thin with hanging belly skin, and pacing around in circles in a small glass cage, while ignorant children and their uncompassionate parents point and smile. This zoo is horrendous and needs to be shut down.
  • the zoo in itself is very cheap and would be 5 stars if the animals were well treated. I get that it is a zoo, but I'd rather pay more for them to have more space and more food (some of them were clearly underfeed, the wolves for exemple, their fur were clearly indicating that they were sick...) overall, it could be a good zoo, if the animals were better taken care of.
  • This zoo is HORRIBLE, the cages are frightfully small, even with 37 degrees we can see a polar bear struggling. Animals look like they are suffering and unfeded I will never go back to this zoo !!! 😪😡
