Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, Osaka

4.4
For ages, the three enshrined Shinto gods at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine have protected the nation, people on sea voyages, and patrons of waka poetry. This grand Sumiyoshi-zukuri style shrine serves as headquarters of some 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines scattered throughout Japan. Because of the three gods' purposes, the shrine is a pilgrimage site for students of military arts, mariners, and poets. Observe how locals swarm the place, especially during New Year's Eve, to make wishes and pray for prosperity. Examine the shrine's symbol--the vermilion-colored Taiko-bashi bridge--and simply relax in the serene ambience. • 1) Take the South China Sea to get to the station under the Residence Of Chiada, very convenient; 2) First see a color of the dragonfly, coupled with the reflection in the water, very beautiful, this is the symbol of the living Jida Society - anti-trump; 3) live in the Jida Society has four books, their temple building style as the old "Live Ji" is listed as a country; The god who lives in Jida is a rabbit, so you can see the rabbit statue in the big society, which is very impressive.

  • On November 3rd, we visited the shrine for the first time. There were a lot of families of Shichigosan, there was a wedding ceremony, and it was very crowded with worshippers who dressed up. It was a fine day without wind, and it was very impressive that the anti-bridge (taiko bridge) shining in the morning sun was beautifully reflected on the quiet water surface of the pond.

  • The Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine is the main shrine for all of the Sumiyoshi shrines around Japan. The various buildings of the shrine are spread out around a park-like area, featuring traditional Japanese...  more »

  • I'm a little hesitant to write a review of Sumiyoshi Taisha. i feel like it's a hidden gem in that there are very little tourists that come through here. But, on the other hand I want to share what a great shrine this is. Despite how close this neighborhood is to the more bustling areas of Osaka, this area is calm and has a small town feel. Likewise, my visit to the shrine was peaceful and calm as there weren't very many people around. The grounds are also beautiful and impeccably manicured. I liked that you have the option of crossing that very steep arched bridge or stone bridges over the water way. The combination of water, trees, and light really make this place feel mystical.
  • The temple compound was large and pleasant. The temple grounds were kept very clean and the drum bridge especially was very attractive. The shrines inside were beautifully made and their design was unique compared to the other Japanese shrines. The garden was also well kept and neat. This place is a great place to visit since it takes you on a world of its own with a peaceful serene atmosphere in the middle of the city. I highly recommend visiting this location especially on festivals and the new year.
  • The best shrine in Osaka. 3,000,000 people visit there in 3 days in New Year. But normal days are so peaceful and quite. Must place for shrine lovers.
  • Peaceful and beautiful place. Good for walking around. Near train station.
  • Really beautiful place. It's even better that is far from tourist sites. Come here later in the evening before it closes, around 4pm and stay behind till it's close. Enjoy the serenity and tranquility of the shrine alone or at least not crowded. Can take awesome shots of the place and the famous bridge. Take your time to stroll through the compound
