Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, Osaka

4.4
For ages, the three enshrined Shinto gods at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine have protected the nation, people on sea voyages, and patrons of waka poetry. This grand Sumiyoshi-zukuri style shrine serves as headquarters of some 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines scattered throughout Japan. Because of the three gods' purposes, the shrine is a pilgrimage site for students of military arts, mariners, and poets. Observe how locals swarm the place, especially during New Year's Eve, to make wishes and pray for prosperity. Examine the shrine's symbol--the vermilion-colored Taiko-bashi bridge--and simply relax in the serene ambience. • certainly the bridge is beautiful, I visit this temple on a Sunday with a wedding in there... Unfortunately after 10 days of visit and a countless number of temple, I saw no difference apart from the bridge. Certainly a little hotel so little tourist

  • Are closing in 5:00 PM can visit the 24-hour shrine because we wanted and was not allowed on the grounds. Reluctantly I worship at the next morning. Please note.

  • The shrine was a great visit that lasted about an hour. The gardens were nice and the shrine as a whole is very well maintained. I enjoyed seeing locals coming to pray at the various buildings.
  • Absolutely amazing shrine situated in a green area that seems to capsule it from the rest of the grey city. We visited the second day of hatsumode and it was crowded as we never seen before! Anyway it was stunning to see the rituals and the beautiful new year decorations, as well as the hundreds of small fair stalls. We had caramelized apples, clementines and strawberries, otonomiyaki, omusoba, tayaki, castella waffles... I recommend it a lot for having the first hatsumode experience!
  • Enjoyed the hatsumode in this shrine, where you can find lots of food stalls and game outlets while visiting the shrine.
  • The temple has an old history. It is an interesting place to visit. Finding the stone 五大力 is a special experience.
  • It could maybe because it has been the first temple that I visited since I came to Japan, but you have to visit this beautiful shrine. It is one of the greatest shrines in Japan, immersed in nature: you just have to enter the shrine to forget about the city's noise.
