Sumiyoshi taisha, Osaka
(4.4/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
For ages, the three enshrined Shinto gods at Sumiyoshi taisha have protected the nation, people on sea voyages, and patrons of waka poetry. This grand Sumiyoshi-zukuri style shrine serves as headquarters of some 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines scattered throughout Japan. Because of the three gods' purposes, the shrine is a pilgrimage site for students of military arts, mariners, and poets. Observe how locals swarm the place, especially during New Year's Eve, to make wishes and pray for prosperity. Examine the shrine's symbol--the vermilion-colored Taiko-bashi bridge--and simply relax in the serene ambience. • One of the most important shrines of Japan with very many visitors. The temple and the trails with the Orange gates are worth a visit. Also the prayer with the songs and dances very liked. If you want top go the way up, you must schedule two hours already, including way back. You can turn but also before. With the Narada's JR suburban train line from Kyoto station in just a few minutes to reach. From there, only a few steps to the temple.

  • This shrine is not on the main tourist trail so is better for that. It is much more quiet and seemed mainly for locals. Different construction and roof style from those we had seen elsewhere including...  more »

  • Very nice Taisha. Have been coming here for years. New Years eve is very busy but a must if you're in the area.
  • Enjoyed the river and bridge peaceful surroundings and shrines of blessing and Shinto. Many japanese wedding and ceremonies will be held here. A Must-visit place when you're in Osaka.
  • Another one of the famous shrines in Osaka. A definite visit if you planned to see shrines during your visit. You also get to cross the Sorihashi bridge leading to the entrance.
  • Tangible darkness like an abyss.
  • Wonderful historic site, still in use today by locals. Charming location and grounds. The surrounding area is nice to stroll around, too.
