Categories: Historic Sites, Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.4/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web
For ages, the three enshrined Shinto gods at Sumiyoshi taisha have protected the nation, people on sea voyages, and patrons of waka poetry. This grand Sumiyoshi-zukuri style shrine serves as headquarters of some 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines scattered throughout Japan. Because of the three gods' purposes, the shrine is a pilgrimage site for students of military arts, mariners, and poets. Observe how locals swarm the place, especially during New Year's Eve, to make wishes and pray for prosperity. Examine the shrine's symbol--the vermilion-colored Taiko-bashi bridge--and simply relax in the serene ambience.
