OSAKA STATION CITY, Osaka

4.0
#7 of 70 in Shopping in Osaka
After undergoing extensive renovations, OSAKA STATION CITY has emerged as a town-sized commercial complex and one of Japan's most highly regarded stations. Across the two flanking high-rise buildings, you have hundreds of high-fashion and specialty stores, along with a hotel, a variety of restaurants, a department store, and a multiplex cinema. In addition to shopping and entertainment, the facility also affords spaces for relaxation: journey to the top of the North Gate building to explore a picturesque roof garden and take in panoramic views of the city. Pause for a moment on the connecting bridge between the two buildings to watch the comings and goings of the trains below. • Arrive in this gigantic Station (bordered by huge shopping malls) causes a sort of anxiety: but where to go? Finally, with a bit of quiet, and also with the Japanese always ready to help, it's OK enough simply.

  • The sheer size of the station is mind blowing. Another example of a stop where you could spend a whole day just looking around. We went there everyday from Kyoto as it was only a 25min ride on the Thu...  more »

  • If you not fluent in reading kanji it is extremely hard to navigate compared to the Tokyo. Because mostly located underground or in the buildings GPS and google maps do not work.
  • Nice trainstation and super undergr shopping mall.
  • We decided to grab a bite from the shopping district at Osaka Station. Similar to Tokyo's underground mall, the shopping centre in Osaka station is MASSIVE. Almost triple that in Tokyo. We did not catch the names of these dishes, however we can recall that they tasted amazing. This is essentially the Japanese fast food court, but everything is so much more healthier!
  • North Gate Bldg 10-11-14/Floors house the "Windy Square" 風之廣場, cinema house, and a roof-top garden. Nice close-up view of nearby skyscrapers from Windy Square. Roof-top garden has lots of flowers and vegetable, and a view of HEP5 ferris wheel. Nice and quiet! Very peaceful!
  • Lots of shops and restaurants, good way to spend some hours while waiting for a train

Where to stay in Osaka

The majority of Osaka's moderate and expensive accommodations concentrate in the districts of Umeda, Kyobashi, Namba, and Shin-Osaka. Base your stay in or near Minami neighborhood for proximity to a wide selection of shopping and dining options. For quick access to long-distance transportation to other cities and areas, look for hotels in Kita district. Many backpackers prefer the budget options in the Tennoji area, where the quality of rooms and prices vary wildly--call or check websites of specific establishments before you make reservations.
