Okayama Castle, Okayama

3.4
#1 of 17 in Historic Sites in Okayama
Admire the striking black facade of Okayama Castle, also known as “Crow Castle.” Built in 1597, the castle’s main tower was destroyed in the 1945 allied bombing and had to be reconstructed, while two watch towers survived the war. Enjoy the view from the castle grounds, nestled on a small hilltop overlooking the Asahi River, and see the fish-shaped gargoyles on the roof of the main tower, gilded during the celebration of the castle’s 400th anniversary. • On this day, new year's day, admission is free & clear people were rewards. Arthur was black Castle image. It was a city seen from the window of the Seto Inland Sea, very good view. Korakuen garden is located near the Castle, moat? Also nice to walk, even. After seeing the mochi on this day, by the way, your behavior was lucky. Okayama has many sunny days and castle tour was a great place to explore.

  • Very friendly staff. Interesting experience, but a lot less there than I thought. Looks like interesting history, but but there was minimal English translation, and I would have been very interested in knowing more of the historical background. Translation of the written Japanese commentary on each item on a separate pamphlet would have been good.
  • Exterior & grounds tour was good. Moated castle. Combined with extraordinary garden grounds across moat not to be missed
  • Get the package and take a look at the castle and then go to the Korakuen next to it. Not very big so it should take you 15 to 20 minuets
  • Went with 12 Australian students. It was quiet which allowed students to be dressed as lords and ladies of the castle. The staff were very helpful and the garden next door was serene and scenic
  • It's a beautiful black castle. Although it is rebuilded, it is still a important historical structure. Inside the castle, there are introduce of history, DIY of Bizenyaki, and COSPLAY the Kimono of japanese princess (the attendant in castle is very nice and patient to help you wearing the Kimono). This castle is not huge nor vast, but both interesting and educational.

Where to stay in Okayama

As a busy transit area, Okayama offers many places to stay, with most of them in the mid-range category and a few catering to luxury-conscious tourists. Large numbers of modern mid-range hotels and budget accommodations are located to the west of the railway station, in the neighborhoods of Ekimaecho and Honmachi heading towards the Asahi River. There are many capsule hotels around the station, and some nearby internet cafes also offer budget overnight stays. Traditional "ryokan" (guesthouses) and youth hostels cluster around nearby Kurashiki.
