Okayama Castle, Okayama

3.4
#1 of 17 in Historic Sites in Okayama
Admire the striking black facade of Okayama Castle, also known as “Crow Castle.” Built in 1597, the castle’s main tower was destroyed in the 1945 allied bombing and had to be reconstructed, while two watch towers survived the war. Enjoy the view from the castle grounds, nestled on a small hilltop overlooking the Asahi River, and see the fish-shaped gargoyles on the roof of the main tower, gilded during the celebration of the castle’s 400th anniversary. • We visited while traveling. Morning admission from 9 am. Donjon is 5th floor, can be reached by elevator. You can also try riding in a palanquin in aesthetics or clothes to wear to take pictures.

  • Castle itself was later reinforced, as the building feel less attractive. However, the landscape from the stone wall around the Castle, and above all enthusiastic description of the volunteers do. Have been studying. The talk was interesting. Nice atmosphere overall. It is also coupled with the Korakuen garden.

  • By itself, it is not worth the visit. Reconstructed castle with a few artifacts displayed. No photography allowed, no English explanations. However, each hour or so, you can participate in a pottery workshop and you can try wearing a suit of armor or kimonos ( if you are size-compatible, of course). Combined tickets are available with the garden and various museums.
  • Worth a visit to me. They offer a pottery class and also allows you to wear a kimono, complete with pictures.
  • If you have never been to a Japanese castle this place is pretty cool, but if you are looking for an original building rather than a concrete reconstruction, this is not the place. It wasn't bad for what it was, but I would much sooner visit Himeji, Matsumoto, or Inuyama castles.
  • Free to walk around the castle grounds, often there are people willing to give you free tours so they can practice their English!
  • The outside of the castle is free and is nice to take a look at. The inside requires a ticket and is pretty boring. Not worth the trouble if you are only planning to see the castle

Where to stay in Okayama

As a busy transit area, Okayama offers many places to stay, with most of them in the mid-range category and a few catering to luxury-conscious tourists. Large numbers of modern mid-range hotels and budget accommodations are located to the west of the railway station, in the neighborhoods of Ekimaecho and Honmachi heading towards the Asahi River. There are many capsule hotels around the station, and some nearby internet cafes also offer budget overnight stays. Traditional "ryokan" (guesthouses) and youth hostels cluster around nearby Kurashiki.
