Takasakiyama Nature Zoo, Oita

4.1
#1 of 21 in Outdoors in Oita Prefecture
Observe a monkey feeding frenzy at Takasakiyama Nature Zoo, a spot at the foot of Mount Takasaki where humans feed monkeys in order to get some peace. Farmers could not get rid of these animals, so they decided to start feeding them regularly, making the zoo a temporary home for whole tribes of free mountain monkeys. Watch and you might see a mama monkey delousing her offspring, or baby monkeys testing their strength as they play. You can ride on the monorail service, dubbed the "kids' monkey rail," offering scenic views of the mountain. The place makes a cheap and fun trip for a whole family, and lies some 3 km (1.6 mi) from Beppu city, or 10 km (6 mi) from Oita. • Monkeys are very well-behaved, unlike Taiwanese life Mountain monkeys will rob food. There are two groups of monkeys, will come down to the park, this time 11 half has a feeding show, the Japanese stream as long as the monkeys through your crotch, will bring good luck. You can also Saifei in a single rail train.

  • Entry was about 500 Yen and train uphill is 200 Yen extra (but worth it). The 'zoo' is not a big place. Just a small hill you can visit. But it is fun to see so many 'wild' monkeys in all ages and see...  more »

  • A great way to see wildlife in a "natural" habitat. Although the park does feed the monkeys, none of them are caged or domesticated. You can tel they are used to humans, but if you get too close they will challenge you. I enjoyed watching them groom and play and fight a bit. It was spring when we went so there were plenty of adorable babies to see.
  • Monkey park located between Oita city and Beppu. You can see tons of them running about and grooming. Good side trip from the nearby aquarium.
  • this zoo is just for monkeys, they are cute and really close to you, but the park is far too small compare with other tourist attractions
  • Pretty cool. Lots of monkeys. Make sure you watch the feeding to see them in full monkey.
  • Takisakiyama is the best thing ever. I thought it would be a lot of monkeys in cages, but oh no. I was wrong. They are everywhere. Feeding times are the best. The park itself isn't that big but it's awesome! And pretty cheap! Parking is ¥410 and entrance fee is ¥510 or less. Check the website. I'd spend at least 1hour in the park. See the feeding a couple times. Then go across the bridge to the gift shop. They have good Beppu and monkey gifts. Plus the blueberry ice cream on the 2nd floor is to DIE FOR. Cheap outing , kid friendly! ( unless your kids like running away from you and touching everything. Not a good idea.

Where to stay in Oita

The accommodations of Oita proper lie between the main train station and the harbor. Congregating around the primary commercial districts, a number of high-rise hotels, some luxury and some standard, cater primarily to visiting businesspeople. Most visitors will instead choose to stay at the nearby resort towns of Beppu (a very touristy option along the coast to the west) and Yufuin (a more stylish and refined version, inland to the west) to enjoy the hot spring spa hotels.
