Shinkyo Bridge, Nikko

3.5
#7 of 180 in Things to do in Nikko
Standing at the entrance into a World Heritage-listed complex of temples, Shinkyo Bridge is an ornate vermilion-lacquered bridge allowing visitors to cross the Daiya River. The current structure dates back to 1636, although a bridge probably crossed this river in the same spot much before that date. Pay a small fee to cross the bridge, appreciate its architecture, and snap a few memorable shots. Take a look at our Nikko online trip planner to schedule your visit to Shinkyo Bridge and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • It is located on the road from Nikko Station to Toshogu Shrine. Many tourists were taking pictures here, but I was surprised to learn that if you pay money, you can actually pass it to the bridge.

  • A beautiful painted God bridge a few years ago. The red was very beautiful and it grew in the blue sky and the snow. Because it is in the place across the river on the way to Nikko Toshogu Shrine, please pay the admission fee and try to walk the bridge.

  • Although they sell tickets to cross it, you can not really cross it and it is better to take pictures from the road, as once on the bridge because you lose the perspective and the panoramic view of the bridge with the river. It's probably the first stop before you start climbing up to Nikko temples.

  • Best view when i came on autumn season. No need to pay to enjoy its beauty.. u can see it even from inside bus. I took walk in one freezing morning to here.. and its amazing when at 7 am no one's there..
  • A very cool little place. The bridge is situated next to a more modern bridge, but despite this has very good views of the river and the surrounding hills and mountains. Also has some shrine-related merchandise at a small shop next to it, but this stuff is less tacky, most of the things there are worth the money. Has a very zen-like feel to it. A definite visit if your in Nikko.
  • The bridge itself is nothing special, but the river is gorgeous. The water rushing below is unbelievably clear like glass with a blue tint. But it's an easy tourist spot to check off your list since it's on the way up to the famous shrines. There was so much traffic from the train station up to the bridge that it was faster to got off the bus & walk up the street to the bridge. A lot of people are going now to see the fall leaves so don't bother with the bus, just walk.
  • We came down from the shrines on the side of the river. When we saw it we thought "ok.... is that it?" But, when you go to the road bridge next to it and look on as it sits in the middle of a gorgeous valley and river you realise how beautifully set in place it is.
  • You probably thinking that should you stop by at this bridge or not. Well, I think you should. This is not just a bridge, this is very historical bridge that really famous in Japan if not just in Nikko area. You got to pay 300 yen to enter but if you don't want, you still can see from the modern bridge nearby. The background will depends on what season you are visiting. Just pass the bridge will be the heritage site of Nikko.
