Rinno-ji Temple, Nikko

3.4
Explore the peaceful spiritual complex of Rinno-ji Temple, built in 766 by a Buddhist monk deep in the mountains. Examine the intricate, ornate structure of the 15 remaining buildings, which hold many interesting artifacts. In the Three Buddha Hall, you'll find statues of Amida, Kannon with a thousand arms, and Kannon with a horse's head. Perhaps the biggest highlights are the serene Japanese gardens: take a seat among the manicured trees and precisely placed stones, and enjoy a moment of quiet reflection. • Nikko Sanwano-ji Temple is registered as a World Heritage Site as a "Shrine temple of Nikko", and it is called "Two Shrines One Temple" in conjunction with this temple, Toshogu Shrine, and Niarayama Shrine. More than 1,200 years ago, Katsumichi Kamito, the founder of Nikko Kaizan, built Four Ryuji Temple. The "Sanbutsudo", a temple that surrounds the main buddha of Nikko Sanzan, is a wooden structure that boasts the largest scale of Mt. Nikko. The guide said that the temple was built in order to hold down The Edo Castle imperial palace and Ieyasu to hold down the north, but the temple was founded in the Nara period.

  • The tokugawa family's tomb was thought to be Zojo-ji Temple, but the temple that becomes the tomb of Mitsuko Yamaya, the third shogun, was Anoji Temple. We need to know more about history. It is full of jojodo, Daisei-in, Sanbutsu-do and highlights.

  • I was there when heavy snowfall so its fantastic memory
  • Good to visit now although it's under renovation
  • - - - Public service announcement - - - The main shrine/ temple is under construction. The entire grand entrance is covered up by hoarding. Visitors can still enter to visit the interior. Decided to give it a pass this time. Visited on: 20 Oct 2018
  • Wonderful complex of building and temples. Worthwhile visit if you like Japanese architecture and art.
  • Visited August 2017, still pretty much under renovation but you could still tour the inside via their track to follow of where you could walk. No photography was allowed. Costs us 1800 yen to visit (wish I hadn't spent that). You can't see the gold Buddhas but through slats in the walls. I would recommend skipping this one and heading straight to Toshogu shrine just a bit of a walk up from this one.
