Nikko National Park, Nikko

(4.7/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
At Nikko National Park, you can explore one of the country's most renowned and scenic areas of natural beauty. Covering a huge 1,147.5 sq km (443 sq mi) the park incorporates ornate places of worship (deemed UNESCO World Heritage Sites), a serene lake, and dramatic waterfalls. Being a center for Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship, the park offers you the chance to observe some of Japan's most revered and impressive shrines, including the lavish Toshogu, and the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first of the Tokugawa shogunate. The main pastime here is hiking, with trails of various difficulty navigating all over the park. Be sure to stand at the viewing point of the dramatic 80 m (264 ft) cascade of Kegon Waterfall, as it empties from the lake above. Put Nikko National Park at the forefront of your travel plans using our Nikko vacation route planner.

  • Very good bus service to all attractions. Wide range of shops and restaurants, though not all open in evening off season. However it was nice to be there wthout many people about, and weather fine.  more »
  • How different from Tokyo, which it is worth to break out for 1-2 days. In one of the guides I have read, that be in Japan and i do not see the Nikko, it's like not to be in Japan. The author had in mind a complex of temples, other than those in Tokyo and Kyoto. Me captivated nature, Dark forests, the statues overgrown with MOSS, Cedars climbing towards the sky. Cherries timidly wypuszczające colored buds in Tokyo already overblown. Two days spent hiking.
