Things to do: sightseeing, museums, shopping
The port city of Niigata has an association with tourism, but not really one to do with the city itself. Lying on the northwest coast of the island, Niigata stares out at Sado Island, a place rich in history, nature, and traditions. Most international visitors use Niigata as a stepping stone to reach Sado, with the city having a good transport system, linked up to other major cities, and ferries running to the island in the Sea of Japan. Those who stay a little longer will be doing so to explore the attractions along the banks of the river that runs through town, including some handicraft shops, local museums, and eateries. Where to stay

As a transport hub, Niigata offers a number of accommodations focused primarily on providing comfortable one-night stays for international travelers. Located close to the train station, the main hotels come big and small, upmarket and budget, and offer differing levels of additional facilities (spas, pools, restaurants) according to their size and price. If you're in the region for a little while, chances are you're going to Sado Island. The popular tourist island has a wealth of accommodations, with seaside hotels, luxury resorts, simple hostels, and traditional "ryokan" (guesthouses).
