Yakushiji Temple, Nara

4.0
#6 of 68 in Sightseeing in Nara
Religious Site Tourist Spot
See one of Japan's oldest and most storied Buddhist temples at Yakushiji Temple, part of the World Heritage Site of historical monuments in ancient Nara. The Yakushi Nyorai, known as the Medicine Buddha, is the main object of veneration, and represents one of the first Buddhist deities to arrive in the country from China. Established in 680 CE, the temple complex has seen destruction by fires throughout the ages, although its original towering pagoda, completed in 730, remains standing--the object of much admiration for its design and artistry. Where to stay in Nara

The historic city of Nara has a welcome number of accommodations for an urban area of its importance and popularity. Close to the main train station stand the main high-rise hotels in the city, all towering over the commercial and modern district that greets train travelers on arrival. To the east, things get a little more luxurious, with hotels close to Nara Park particularly well-appointed and rich in additional facilities. Standard hotels stand in a cluster to the southeast of the old palace ruins, while a number of pleasant, no-frills guesthouses can be found in the residential suburbs.

  • 4 Stars only because the older of the two pagodas is completely covered as it undergoing restoration/repairs (yes, the world revolves around me). Yakushiji takes a little more effort to get to, as it is off the main line, but once you're at the nearest train station, it is close. Great place to visit with plenty of historical statues.
  • I missed the chance to pray to Medicine Buddha, hope got the chance to go again. Namo Shakyamuni Buddha
  • The Yakushi-ji Temple is split into two parts with a small road in between, such is its size. It is made up of quite a number of buildings including pagodas, halls, and an old learning centre. There is debate about exactly when it was built but it was either in the seventh of eighth century. Only one of the buildings – the East Pagoda – is completely original. The others have been reconstructed after being damaged or destroyed by fire. Yakushi-ji is considered to be one of the most famous imperial temples in the whole country.
