Sarusawa-ike, Nara

(240+ reviews on the web)
Water Body Nature / Park
Enjoy a bit of serenity at Sarusawa-ike, an artificial lake dating back to the 8th century. Although legend has it that a court maid drowned herself here after falling in love with the emperor, today the area exudes tranquil ambiance. Feed turtles and ducks, admire elegant herons posing on the rocks, and look for the shrine peeking from the lush greenery. Relax on one of the many benches, and then enjoy a serene cup in the tea garden. In spring, take in the weightless wonder of cherry trees in blossom. If visiting in September, consider checking out the Uneme festival, complete with dragon boats, fans of autumn blooms, and lanterns floating on the water. Put Sarusawa-ike into our Nara tourist route planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Nara.

  • Really nothing special about that ugly, muddy pond... I don't know what is the big deal with it. You will surely pass by when going to the historic district, but don't make it be the goal of your trip...  more »

  • A fairly large pond at the end of Sanjo Dori. It is a very photogenic area so a nice area to just walk around. They also have a small multi tiered pagoda near the lake side. Although not in Nara park there are still some deer who manage to get here.
  • This is a beautiful little lake with lots of dragonflies in summer. A nice area to sit down and relax and just in front of the Nara Park area.
  • Came here during early autumn unfortunately the leaves were still changing. Still a very charming serene pond.
  • A little pond with nothing special. The water is not very clean!
  • Great for people-watching and taking pictures.
