(220+ reviews on the web)
Mountain Nature / Park
Surround yourself in evergreen scenery and immerse yourself in nature at Mt. Wakakusa. Almost completely covered in grass, the 342 m (1,122 ft) high hill provides you with a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a picnic while you enjoy views over the nearby town. As you follow man-made trails around the mountain, you will come across deer who call the local area home. Once a year, a festival in which locals burn the dead grass of the hill takes place, a tradition that supposedly originated in 1760. According to legend, it was the result of a boundary dispute between two temples. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Mt. Wakakusa by using our Nara itinerary planner.

  • Worth a visit while you are at Touda-Ji, entrance is cheap and the views of Nara at the top are excellent. Great place to relax for a bit and get away from the crowds. There aren't many deer up there ...  more »
