Isuien Garden, Nara
(4.3/5 based on 280+ reviews on the web)
Enjoy tea on tatami under the thatched roofs of Isuien Garden, admiring unparalleled panoramic views of an attractively manicured landscape next to Yoshikigawa River. Originally built in 1670, with Edo-period additions, this privately owned garden spans roughly 13,500 sq m (145,000 sq ft), and remains the only walking garden in Nara. The central pond features two islands with sculptures of a crane and a tortoise, representing longevity. You can visit the Neiraku Museum within the complex, featuring a collection of early East Asian art. Located in central Nara, the garden sits a 15-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara station. Put Isuien Garden and other Nara attractions into our Nara holiday planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Pay to enter. Price covers the garden and museum. Shares a fence with Yoshikien garden next door which is free for tourists. Guy at ticket booth not friendly.
  • A friend of MOSS-like he was happy. I went to 11/6, but the tourists scattered and calm atmosphere. See the garden from the South Gate and great views.

  • Beautiful and tranquil gardens with Todaiji and Mount Wakakusa as backdrops. Visit this place in the morning instead of Todaiji and you will be rewarded with smaller crowds.
  • Very beautiful and peaceful Japanese garden. 900 yen entrance fee is pretty expensive but it's worth it just for the gardens, the museum is included in the price but it's pretty underwhelming.
  • This garden is at the back of the place people goto in nara. But so worth walking to 12-15 minutes. Enjoy the breath taking traditional Japanese garden setup like most of us dream of to have back home
  • Our most favorite garden in Japan. We think it is better than most of famous gardens in Kyoto. Cozy, humane, sensitive, vibrant, creative. It also has a small but precious museum.
  • Isuien Garden is a must-see if you're in Nara. It's the only walking garden in Nara and it's beautifully preserved. They charge an admission fee of about 900JPY but the scenery is worth it.
