Isuien Garden, Nara

4.3
#2 of 9 in Parks in Nara
Enjoy tea on tatami under the thatched roofs of Isuien Garden, admiring unparalleled panoramic views of an attractively manicured landscape next to Yoshikigawa River. Originally built in 1670, with Edo-period additions, this privately owned garden spans roughly 13,500 sq m (145,000 sq ft), and remains the only walking garden in Nara. The central pond features two islands with sculptures of a crane and a tortoise, representing longevity. You can visit the Neiraku Museum within the complex, featuring a collection of early East Asian art. Located in central Nara, the garden sits a 15-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara station. • Beautiful and relaxing park for walking and admiring the view over the mountains and the greenery. Calm and pretty. You can also have tea in the tea house in the park.  more »
  • Is located just just a little away from the main street of Nara a place is much less crowded. Admission is 900 yen and slightly higher or not, I thought. However, the modest come felt that park visitors are kept and seen your garden in a comfortable environment. Garden, green foliage of some other, other colors mix with nice. Also include a building that is based off of the Katsura detached Palace, and was interesting reading.

  • Admission ticket includes an entry to the pottery museum beside which i feel can forgo if you're on a tight schedule. Don't miss out on this Teletubbies land inside Isuien garden! It's amazing! I've been there in all seasons except winter and i have to say it's absolutely stunning in Autumn!
  • Very very nice. It's called 依水院 meaning "next to the water" which is a very poetic and suitable name for this garden. Love the scene and its reflection in the pond. A must go garden if it's a sunny autumn day. Good to take picture in the morning due to the sunlight direction. Note: visit at 9-10 to avoid the crowd. Visit garden first before the museum to avoid the crowd.
  • Worth going. Excellent old arifacts and jistory.
  • The garden next door is free and just as nice. I was wary of a 900 yen entry fee but the reviews made me feel it was worth the fee. No. I feel cheated :(
  • The free garden next-door is just as exquisite. Would avoid. (900 yen is just too much for what this is)

Where to stay in Nara

The historic city of Nara has a welcome number of accommodations for an urban area of its importance and popularity. Close to the main train station stand the main high-rise hotels in the city, all towering over the commercial and modern district that greets train travelers on arrival. To the east, things get a little more luxurious, with hotels close to Nara Park particularly well-appointed and rich in additional facilities. Standard hotels stand in a cluster to the southeast of the old palace ruins, while a number of pleasant, no-frills guesthouses can be found in the residential suburbs.
