Heijokyu Ruins, Nara

(2.8/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
Step back in time at Heijokyu Ruins, an ancient Japanese capital from the Nara period and the first historical attraction in Japan declared a World Heritage Site. In 710, the capital, modeled on the capital of Chinese Tang Dynasty, was established around present-day Nara. Covered by rice fields for centuries, the settlement was rediscovered in the late 1990s. The palace, once the center of the city, houses the imperial residence, the hall for national ceremonies, and bureaucratic offices. The site also features two gates, a history museum, and an exhibit hall with thousands of archaeological items on display.
