Gangoji Temple, Nara

(3.8/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
Take a look at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gangoji Temple, a once-sprawling complex of buildings with a main temple that stands out as one of the oldest in the country. Observe its picturesque structure, and notably the tile roofing called "gyokibuki," one of the oldest known examples of the technique of partially overwrapping tapered roof tiles. Generally a peaceful place to visit, the temple is somewhat overshadowed by larger counterparts in the region, making it a good spot to escape the crowds and conpemplate the rich history. • Famous Temple, a world heritage site is a bit away from most of the major temples. Just cherry blossoms are in full bloom, really beautiful. Good size just to see both statues and buildings, who enjoyed less closely. Bad congestion todaiji Temple, Kofukuji Temple is not.

  • Worth a visit if you are in the area but don't go out of your way as there are plenty of better temples in the region.  more »

  • Well.. I didn't quite get to visit the temple itself but there is a good sake/drink bar opposite (next to the teppanyaki restaurant)) oft that can offer you a tasting of sake qualities.
  • A peaceful temple, simple, sober. Some English informations, lavatories, little museum...
  • Well, indeed it is a world heritage, but to be honest; I wasn't really been excited by the structure itself. There is a museum in the left hand side showing some statues of Buddha and japanese structures plus some antiques. And one more thing, the fee is 500 yen per adult.
  • A peaceful, quiet temple.
  • You have to go down some small roads and make good use of a map to find the Gango-ji Temple. Unlike all the others, it is hidden away in a narrow street in a suburb of Nara. Once inside, you’ll also realise it is not the largest nor visually-spectacular but it is home to a lot of history. The graveyard is particularly interesting and the main hall is considered to be a Japanese national treasure. Once upon a time the temple complex spread out over a much larger area but it was destroyed by fire or overtaken by residential growth over the centuries.
