#1 of 81 in Nature in Shikoku
Island Nature / Park
Take a boat from Uno (Honshu) or Takamatsu (Shikoku) to explore Naoshima, a small island known for its modern art museums and natural sights. Rent a bike upon arrival to travel around the island in style, taking in its charmingly selective and thoroughly modern cultural sites, and tranquil sandy beaches. The contrast between the thrilling modernity of the island's cultural highlights and its laid-back, rustic atmosphere makes for an unusual but pleasant mix. Don't rush the experience, and take the time to explore the island's charms, both futuristic and traditional. Where to stay in Naoshima-cho

Book ahead if you opt to stay in Naoshima-cho, especially during weekends and holidays, as the island has become an increasingly popular beach getaway. A wide variety of accommodations lie scattered across the island, but remember that many of the lodgings don't have English-speaking staff, so you'll need to make reservations in Japanese. Budget and mid-range options abound, including ryokans, hostels, dormitories, and beachside lodges, while an extravagant designer hotel-museum often books up months in advance.

  • Amazing, the island only has about 3,000 residents so most of the island is beautiful forests and great biking paths. It's unreal how scenic the island is, photos I took look like post cards. If nothi...  more »
  • Walk it, enjoy the vistas, this is a lovely island. Unfortunately, its famous museums are much too stiff and self-important and not friendly at all. Also, they forbid you from taking ANY photos, which...  more »
  • It took us longer to get there from Okayama than we expected. A long, slow journey on a railway, whose scenic beauties have been substantially over-hyped. But as soon as we got to the ferry port, the ...  more »
