Benesse House Museum, Naoshima-cho

Benesse House Museum represents a contemporary art museum-come-restaurant and hotel, boasting striking architecture nestled on a verdant coast. Established on the concept of "coexistence of nature, art, and architecture," and designed by Tadao Ando, the museum makes the most of its picturesque and natural surroundings by utilizing large windows, which make for a bright and visually appealing gallery experience. Explore four buildings, each with their own distinct works and guest rooms, then head into the surrounding gardens and beaches to discover artworks placed in the natural environment to great effect. Guests who choose to stay at the museum have 24-hour access to galleries, giving the exhibits a secondary aspect at nighttime. After perusing the evocative works, consider dining in the onsite restaurant, which also offers views over the Inland Sea. • Great museum. Premium works. Amazing view on the Inner Sea islands.
  • The least worth to see unless you are a Benesse House guest, on my opinion. The price is not ready paying off the content. My recommendation would be to leave this venue for last.
  • Super cool building, 007 all the way.
  • The exhibited artworks are really great and the building amazing.
  • Stunning grounds, beach views, gorgeous artworks

Where to stay in Naoshima-cho

Book ahead if you opt to stay in Naoshima-cho, especially during weekends and holidays, as the island has become an increasingly popular beach getaway. A wide variety of accommodations lie scattered across the island, but remember that many of the lodgings don't have English-speaking staff, so you'll need to make reservations in Japanese. Budget and mid-range options abound, including ryokans, hostels, dormitories, and beachside lodges, while an extravagant designer hotel-museum often books up months in advance.
