Benesse House Museum, Naoshima-cho

Benesse House Museum represents a contemporary art museum-come-restaurant and hotel, boasting striking architecture nestled on a verdant coast. Established on the concept of "coexistence of nature, art, and architecture," and designed by Tadao Ando, the museum makes the most of its picturesque and natural surroundings by utilizing large windows, which make for a bright and visually appealing gallery experience. Explore four buildings, each with their own distinct works and guest rooms, then head into the surrounding gardens and beaches to discover artworks placed in the natural environment to great effect. Guests who choose to stay at the museum have 24-hour access to galleries, giving the exhibits a secondary aspect at nighttime. After perusing the evocative works, consider dining in the onsite restaurant, which also offers views over the Inland Sea. • As house gests we enjoyed the many objects and installations. The architecture of Adao Tando is also an integral part of the museum  more »
  • This museum is wonderful for its design and construction by the architect Tadao Ando. The space is simply spectacular and the collection is sensational.

  • Indoor and outdoor works of many can be enjoyed. Like to experience fine art utilizing the location near the top of the mountain and the sea, and rather than feel. I also purchased a key ring yellow pumpkin and worthy name of the Museum shop located on the first floor, a fancy goods, stationery and books are sold. Crowded as summer vacation was able to appreciate the leisurely. I think or was brain can spend their valuable time, usually without the stimulus.

  • Benesse House is quite a different experience of a hotel and a museum on a rather large private land. Hotel guests are able to continue to visit the museum section up till 2300 hours but the shuttle stops running early on, so to stay that late, you'll be walking back to your room. Bring a strong LED flashlight so you may see where you're stepping. Dinner on there costs ¥20,000. Breakfast costs ¥2,200. This was part of a tour package. If we do it on our own, we wouldn't choose to stay here, but someplace in town where the prices wouldn't be so expensive.as nice as this place is, it's just way over our budget. The architecture is quite beautiful, including the design and functional space.
  • Beautiful hotel in Noashima. The architecture is amazing and the hotel is filled with great art pieces. Highly recommend
  • Fantastic destination. The combination of art, accommodation and service is hard to beat. The art was inspiring. The food was exceptional. The service first rate. If your holidaying in Japan put this on your list. It's a must see.
  • A truly impressive building from an architectural standpoint, however I found the structure overpowered the collection, which was a bit minimal. Let’s get down to brass tacks here... This is a hotel, that also has an art gallery attached. I didn’t stay in the hotel, or eat at the restaurant; this review is for the Benesse House Museum only. Although the museum stays open until an accommodating 9pm - the restaurant and cafe were closed and the shuttle’s last service was around 6pm. Overall, a bit of a gimmick.
  • Loved our stay here. The surroundings were peaceful and the building is beautiful with many little surprises to discover on the grounds (if you appreciate things like unconventional manipulation of natural light and unusual placement of picture frames). There's an otherworldly-ness to the entire island, a fun place to visit :)
