Benesse House Museum, Naoshima-cho
(4/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Benesse House Museum represents a contemporary art museum-come-restaurant and hotel, boasting striking architecture nestled on a verdant coast. Established on the concept of "coexistence of nature, art, and architecture," and designed by Tadao Ando, the museum makes the most of its picturesque and natural surroundings by utilizing large windows, which make for a bright and visually appealing gallery experience. Explore four buildings, each with their own distinct works and guest rooms, then head into the surrounding gardens and beaches to discover artworks placed in the natural environment to great effect. Guests who choose to stay at the museum have 24-hour access to galleries, giving the exhibits a secondary aspect at nighttime. After perusing the evocative works, consider dining in the onsite restaurant, which also offers views over the Inland Sea. • First and foremost, I'll say I think the Benesse House Museum is a worthwhile trip. It is, however, a trip: several hours' train ride from Tokyo or Kyoto, plus a 20-minute ferry ride, plus a few minut...  more »
  • A lot more to see than the Chichu Museum, if you didn't feel your Chichu ticket was worth the money (though I guess the art is quite different). Some are quite interesting. Some of the glass doors are...  more »
  • Museum on 3 floors, we very quickly made the turn. Some works are beautiful or original, but there are a lot of things without interest. Nice view from the Café. 1,000 yen entry, less than an hour's visit.

  • Shuttle bus travel between (Underground Museum) - (Lee Ufan Museum) - (Benesse House) - (Tutujiso). You can park your car or bicycle near (Underground M) or (Tutujiso) and use the shuttle bus on a hot day or each spot are 10min walk in between. If the time is allowed, start from (Underground M) because it's on top of the hill and you can walk down hill to (Tutujiso) which is on the beach side.
  • Staying at the Park building we enjoyed everything. The structure is amazing, views, breakfast buffet, and the entire island. Friendly staff and shuttle service. We didn't want to leave...
  • What an experience. The beautiful concrete architecture is splendid, integrating itself wonderfully with the landscape. Every museum is interesting. As for the hotel - if you can afford it - what more can you ask for ? Everything is incredible and you're treated like a king or queen. Stayed in Beach, with the perfect view of the see and of Takamatsu on the other side. My only regret : no photos allowed inside.
  • very beautiful location, even in January's off season. Accommodations are excellent, service very good, food great.
  • Good museum with excellent exhibitions. If you eat at the café though beer prepared to wait a long time to be served.
