Benesse House Museum represents a contemporary art museum-come-restaurant and hotel, boasting striking architecture nestled on a verdant coast. Established on the concept of "coexistence of nature, art, and architecture," and designed by Tadao Ando, the museum makes the most of its picturesque and natural surroundings by utilizing large windows, which make for a bright and visually appealing gallery experience. Explore four buildings, each with their own distinct works and guest rooms, then head into the surrounding gardens and beaches to discover artworks placed in the natural environment to great effect. Guests who choose to stay at the museum have 24-hour access to galleries, giving the exhibits a secondary aspect at nighttime. The Oval is reserved only for residents. Many installations are also placed outside. The hotel-Museum sees the light in 1992 and was designed by architect Tadao Ando. The collection exhibited is simply extraordinary. It will take at least half a day.

  • I am a fan of Richard Long and he has 3 great works here. Loved the Yves Klein too. There must be something for everyone with the variety of artists here. But it does cost a bit to enter.

  • Haven't stayed in the hotel, but the gallery is superb. Great collection, good value and a nice selection of outdoor art in the vicinity too. The largest and best of the three major museums in this area of Naoshima.
  • A beautiful and spacious modern art museum, architecture by Ando Tadao. Be sure to also see Chichu underground museum and the IE Project.
  • Very chic and relaxing. The restaurant is excellent. Everything is expensive but cool.
  • Worth the trip, staffs were nice as well as art works. Japanese restaurant serving Lunch presented unforgettable memories. Very nice
  • We have only been to the museum, and I'm sure the guest house is nice if you have the dough, but after all the hype the museum was a bit of a let down. Set in a beautiful, masterful building, most of the works on display are straight out of the great book of modern art cliches, including the must have framed blank squares and a pair of chairs made art by the fact you can't sit on them. The scenery is stuning though and the walk up to the museum from the beach trough a string of clever landscape and light-hearted sculptures is a delight.
