  • Much like Osaka's market there is a fish and food section which is crowded given the street is very narrow, prices better than its Osaka sister. It is aimed at mainly local and o/s tourists. Not likel...  more »
  • Wow, nothing like it if you’re a food and other stuff person. Just start walking and looking. Some areas are covered giving you a claustrophobic feeling with mass amounts of people. Going early may be...  more »
  • The market is located in the heart of Kyoto, very convenient to get there by metro. It is a conglomerate of stalls, stands and small shops. I recommend going on a rainy day, being very large and all indoors, you can very well devote a half-day visit or more. You will be immersed in the Japanese cousin, you really find everything (sushi, sweets, street food of all kinds, ...), there are no shortage of souvenir and kimono and yukata shops. Eating on the street or the market is strictly forbidden, if you buy food you have to eat it at the stall/shop. It is one of Kyoto's most historic sites and is definitely worth a visit during your trip.

  • Great place to try all the snacks and food locally. It is also a real market that sells fresh fish and vegetables. I have been here 5 years ago which tend to have more market stalls then but it’s now more of eateries, dried goods and souvenir shops.
  • Very vibrant place with plenty of different shops to visit plus you have the Nishiki food market as well. We went at night and the colours and atmosphere was really good. We found a nice little restaurant that had lactose free food on their menu which was a plus!
  • Very lively with vendors giving out samples. Fun for bite size local delicacies. Mostly fish but it is possible to find some vegetarian and even vegan options, gets very crowded though and you need to be prepared to move through very slowly.
  • What a wonderful thing to exist in the heart of Kyoto! This is such a thrill to go through. Not only is there a lot of food you normally won't see, but the entire atmosphere is just cozy and Japanese! As a tourist in the country, this was a dream come true and is was a thrill to try one unique thing after another. If you love food and daring yourself to try new things, you'll love this! As a bonus, there are a lot of fun shops as well!
  • Good range of stores. Lively and lovely to take in all the foods. Quite commercialized but still offers better stuff than at souvenirs at train stations and airport. Well worth a trip and I definitely recommend getting out of your comfortable ryokan for this.
