#3 of 19 in Historic Sites in Naha
Historic Site Tourist Spot
Observe Tamaudoun Site, a 16th-century mausoleum for the royal family of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The mausoleum features three different crypts for kings, queens, princes, princesses, and the recently deceased prior to undergoing Okinawan burial traditions. Constructed of natural rocks, it features intricate symbols of the royal family. In front of the entrance sit two Shisha statues acting as the tomb guards. Unfortunately, the crypts are not open to the public, and information is not available in English. Using our world travel planner, Naha attractions like Tamaudoun Site can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • 3 years Buri visited Naha for the charipota. While the SHURI district and charipota world heritage site jade Ling (tamaudun) for the first time visited. Admission fee is 300 yen for adults. Administrative offices downstairs, "mausoleum" internal photos and artifacts were exhibited. Haven't visited the "mausoleum", and wait for the Okinawa-funeral of Ryukyu King's greatness and, at that time, remains several years later to be, then wash the bones, URNs had been stuffed with grave became a meaningful "mausoleum" viewing.

  • Interesting to see burial customs of Japanese royalty. Would have been nice to have more translated into English. Lovely grounds in the middle of bustling urban area.
  • The exhibition room before the actual site is better than the site itself: in the interest of purity, there isn't a single explanatory sign, only the bare, forbidding stone structure. Which is still interesting in it's own way, just doesn't eat up a lot of time to take in.
  • Worth a quick visit. Not much to see but if you love peace and quiet without many tourists while seeing a part of Okinawan history, just go. Entry fee is a bit steep at 300 YEN.
  • First things first yen only for the entrance. Anyway, this is a cool place to take a quick little trip before heading to Shuri Castle. It is one of the 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites! It has a small museum as well. It's definitely worth your time. It'll take about 10-15 minutes to look around and explore.
  • Museum isn't really worth much if you can't read Japanese, but the mausoleum was cool for only $5US. You don't get to go inside though.
