Naminoue-gu Shrine, Naha

3.9
See the impressive setting and learn about the rich history of Naminoue-gu Shrine, a place of worship set high on a bluff overlooking the ocean and a beach. Legend has it a fisherman founded the shrine here to mark the spot where he caught a glowing stone that improved his hauls. Given its dramatic coastal position, the Shinto shrine's dedication to the sea and nirai kanai, the source of life, makes sense, as does its historical connection with fishermen and sailors, with maritime workers coming here to ask for protection and safe passage. Dating back to at least the 14th century, the shrine was destroyed during the battle of Okinawa in 1945, and has been rebuilt and added to during the post-war era. A visit to Naminoue-gu Shrine represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Naha visit planning website to plot your vacation.

  • It's about 20 minutes ' walk from the center of the city, and there are a lot of light visitors who will come here to ask and pray, a century of history that can appreciate the beauty of tradition and the divine atmosphere.

  • After the shrine there is a beautiful beach, a small clean sand beach, you can swim, but the wave on the shrine on the top of the temple, should be first to the shrine before the beach to take pictures and play with water. We like this kind of scenery, advice to Jomon this is a must visit, beach tourists are not many, very quiet small beach.

  • A nice way to experience Japanese culture. They have sign postings in English, Chinese, and Japanese on how to pray and partake in the water cleansing. Also, very close to a small beach area.
  • Located near the beach, barely 5 minutes walk. As it was new year’s eve, there were lots of stalls set up, pending the new year celebrations. Lots of food, fun games and gift stores to keep you entertained. The shrine had the normal Japanese rituals of washing your hands and making a donation before prayers, where you clap your hands twice. Not to worry, the instructions for these are all just by the side, in case you do not know what to do. It isn’t really a huge place, but the park, museum and beach are just nearby.
  • A nice place that is not hard to located. Temple overall feel like what we see on Japanese carton. Limited car park is available. If you have time, you can also walk around.
  • Quaint little shrine. The Naminoue beach is just “beside it”, down a flight of stairs by the carpark, walk pass a v small field and down some more stairs.
  • I go here every year after the countdown there is a long wait to get into the shrine to pray for good luck, buying amulets and then feast on the local food and games while enjoying the beach. This temple is for all 12 Chinese animals.
