Tokugawa-en, Nagoya

4.1
#3 of 26 in Parks in Nagoya
Wander around Tokugawa-en, an elegant Japanese landscape full of history and serenity. The garden's origins date back to the Edo period; today it embodies the modern samurai culture. Walk through the original wooden black gate, which survived the destruction of World War II. Follow the stream from a majestic waterfall that flows to the central pond. As you explore, look for peonies, Japanese apricots, irises, maples, and camellias, depending on the season. Stop by the restaurant for some fine dining. • Recommended places to walk is annoying people. First of all, quiet. Have fun around then. Right next to it, the Tokugawa Art Museum; You will enjoy the two at the same time. Spirit, one's eyes.

  • Serene, peaceful and with birds chirping all around. Very tranquil in the middle of a busy city. Nice place to take in the beautiful pond with lots of Japanese carps.  more »

  • Nice and quiet place in centre of Nagoya. Bit too crowded on Constitution Memorial Day, though. The waterfall is somehow nice too, but way smaller than you can see in other ad pictures. There are few places to relax, like small summer house, or a tea house with nice overview of the pond.
  • Not my favorite but I can understand why people would enjoy it. I visited both park and museum and was kind of still "hungry" for more. One good thing is that there are lockers for your bags.
  • Beautiful Japanese garden designed around a large pond. There are waterfalls and streams throughout the garden.
  • Amazing place to see with really cool artifacts from the history of Japan. Would be nice if we could take pictures without flash atleast but I understand. Really cool place. Great garden on site as well.
  • Slightly crowded garden. Acceptably calm and relaxing. Well maintained.

Where to stay in Nagoya

The central district, just south from the castle and its gardens, houses the bulk of accommodations in Nagoya. You'll find a good range of standard hotels, with onsite restaurants, simple rooms, and perhaps a pool in this area. Look slightly to the west, or closer to the castle,to find more luxurious accommodations. Across the surrounding residential areas, take a look close to the metro stations to find some of the most conveniently located, but budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses.
