Kumano Nachi Taisha, Nachikatsura-cho

4.5
#1 of 8 in Historic Sites in Higashimuro-gun
See the fusion of Buddhist and Shinto influences that separates the region from others at Kumano Nachi Taisha, a UNESCO-protected Shinto shrine occupying the same plot as a Buddhist temple. Located halfway up the mountain, the shrine stands at 350 m (1148 ft) above sea level, with its impressive backdrop featuring the tallest waterfall in the country. The shrine's architecture and spiritual importance combine with the scenery to give the area an atmosphere of reverence and calm. Part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, the shrine--along with others on the 1000-year-old pilgrimage route--has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Where to stay in Nachikatsura-cho

You can find a couple of guesthouses and minshukus (private homes with rental rooms) close to the temple, located inland from the center of Nachikatsuura-cho. However, by far the greatest collection of places to stay in Nachikatsuura-cho lies down by the coast. You can find some good budget hotels near the main train stations that run past the water, as well as some side-street guesthouses. Look for traditional ryokans offering onsite spa facilities close to the hot springs.
