Rock Breaking Cherry Tree, Morioka

3.8
Wonder at the natural journey of Rock Breaking Cherry Tree, a 400-year-old cherry tree. Sprouted from the tiny crevice of a giant granite boulder, it now rises 10 m (32 ft) and symbolizes the strength of the city in the face of the 2011 tsunami. Having survived the biting northern winters as well as a fire that engulfed the adjacent courthouse, the tree, year in year out, heralds the start of new life as one of the first sakuras to blossom each spring. Rock Breaking Cherry Tree is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Morioka Edition.

  • From the big rock between the stem! Premises of the court personnel, and gaping, it's early in the morning and will work behind. At least not in bloom will be more spectacular cherry blossoms will bloom time and will be charmed by its presence.

  • Stone often cute so I thought Sakura, cherry blossoms are so old that seems forced, ascent ever. I think normally, just surviving from a facility in the country, and turned wood. Rather, sorry.

  • In the front yard of the Court-cherry trees and boulders around its base-broken in two pieces-crack is spreading every year. Woah ❣

  • One can make up a lot of philosophy from this but it is actually an interesting sight. Must visit once. Takes only 5-10 min.
  • It's literally a big sakura tree growing in the middle of large rock. It's inside a government office area so your access are very limited.
  • Not only is this famous tree a testament to overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles, but there are even staff in green berets helping visitors take group photos.
  • Worth seeing!
  • Great lesson on persistence and determination.
