Onino Sentakuita, Miyazaki

4.1
#2 of 19 in Sightseeing in Miyazaki
Geologic Formation Landmark
A work of art created by nature, Onino Sentakuita represents wavelike rocks created by the constant waves and aligned in perfectly parallel lines. Driving offers arguably best way to see all of the formations stretched along the coastline, though you can also walk on the rocks and gather shellfish and crabs when the tide is low. Before you head to Miyazaki, plan trip itinerary details with our user-friendly Miyazaki travel itinerary maker, to make sure you see all that Miyazaki has to offer, including Onino Sentakuita.

  • Very fantastic and spectacular. Even the sound of the waves will be healed. There were a lot of crabs and children is a great joy. Ligia exotica, the surprise.

  • Known both as the 'devil's/ogre's washboard', while you may see these unique rock formations caused by natural formation and erosion as you travel all over Aoshima, it is only around path leading to the Aoshima Shrine that you will be able to walk right up to the formations without the risk of being washed out to sea by crashing waves. If you are travelling to this island on your own, the most efficient way is to take the bus that specifically stops right outside the shrine. If you are taking the bus from Miyazaki train station, go to the information booth just beyond the entrance doors to the bus terminal and ask for the bus timetable. There are two different sets of times depending on whether it is a weekday or weekend. There is a very helpful gentleman at the information booth that can speak English and can give you an English information timetable. On board the bus, announcements are made over loudspeaker as to the upcoming stops in 4 different languages- Japanese, Korean, English and Mandarin. If you are also planning to travel to other tourist places in Miyazaki, then the best value for money is getting an all day buss pass, that will allow you to hop on and off for 1000 yen per adult the whole day. These passes can be bought at the information booth. Be aware that transport here, as like the rest of the Japan arrives and leaves on time 99% of the time. So plan your trip around Miyazaki very wisely and be aware of the time, lest you just miss a buss and have to wait another huge stretch of time to catch the next one.
  • “Demons washboard” This is a wonderful display of how nature shapes and prepares itself for us to witness, I rank this rock formation as interesting as Genbudo near Amano Hashidate. I believe that you could spend a good couple of hours enjoying the Onino Senkatuita, the Aoshima Shrine and Aoshima Island.
