Atago Shrine, Minato

(220+ reviews on the web)
Lookout Religious Site
Climb the steep ancient stairs leading to Atago Shrine, a Shinto place of worship built in 1603. The main deity Homusubi no Mikoto protects the residents from fire, and legend says that whoever climbs to the top and prays will have luck in life. Given the fact that the shrine lies in the midst of Tokyo's business center, don't be surprised to see suited-up businesspeople coming in haste. On the top of the 26 m (85 ft) hill, a vista spreads across the business district and buildings. A small pond, a Zen garden, and devotees add to the soothing and spiritual ambiance. Enjoy a meal at the onsite restaurant. Arrange your visit to Atago Shrine and discover more family-friendly attractions in Tokyo using our Tokyo vacation route planner.

  • They have a long "Stairway to Success." It's scary if you have a fear of heights like me...
  • One of my favorite spots in the area. The final stretch of my morning run, go up the 60+ very steep stairs, cool down up top to the sound of water and the fish jumping around in the water. Salute the Gods of Water and Fire, start the day. :) The steps are steep but definitely manageable. Go at your own pace.
  • Nice place above the city noises. Really relaxing atmosphere over the streets of Tokyo.
  • Beautiful but it tends to be crowded.
  • It is a fairly steep staircase that feels terror.
