Shirakawa Springs, Minamiaso-mura

Must see · Landmark · Tourist Spot
See the water bubbling up from below at Shirakawa Springs, whose natural source lies among thick forest scenery. Sample the fresh, crisp water, selected as one of the 100 best waters in Japan by the Japanese Environmental Agency. Surrounded by tall cedars and blossoms, the spring occupies a scenic position, so bring your camera, as well as a bottle or two so you can take some water away with you. Otherwise, purchase a plastic bottle at one of the shops by the nearby shrine. • A great spot to feel the nature. Try the clear water directly from the spring, you may even purchase a bottle to bring some back to your hotel.  more »

  • A very serene and peaceful place. They say this place is where all the water in kumamoto came from. I have no doubt at all looking at the water spring, it is super clear and you can drink it as is, water is really fresh and has a tiny bit of coconut taste. Some stalls sell decoration rocks and pendant, and a shrine is also available too. Really loving being here.
  • Very relaxing and silent place . I visit here in January and rare tourists here. You can take 30 mins or more to refresh the mind .
  • Beautiful and great water. We had a nice soba from a wonderful, older couple with a shop on the property.
  • Some of the clearest water i have seen. Remember to bring empty bottles if you are driving so you can fill them. I have seen many people doing that and the shrine even offers funnels for easier filling. Entrance is a 100 yen and you can drink your fill of the water when you are in there. Nearby shops offer products made of the spring water like ice cream and paper. You can purchase empty bottles at these shops too!
  • It's amazing. The water is so clear, you can even see the water come out from the riverbed. And it also tastes good, sweet and fresh.
