Godaido, Matsushima-machi

3.3
#4 of 44 in Historic Sites in Miyagi Prefecture
Historic Site Religious Site
Admire twelve Zodiac animal carvings on the wall of Godaido, a temple founded by a Tendai monk in 828 CE. The site depicts five wisdom kings of Japanese Buddhism. The temple opens its door only once every 33 years to display its sacred statues (it was last opened in 2006), so don't plan to go inside. Sitting on the small island, the free site has easy access by three walking bridges and features a souvenir shop nearby. • Easiest temple in Matsushima for those arriving by boat or train. So also rather crowded. Beautiful temple with long tradition. Bridge is fun and has a story. Easy to visit, rather little to see.  more »
  • Definitely pop over to this small temple located on a small island, which you reach by a cute red bridge. Takes 10 minutes! Worth doing.  more »
  • The highlight of this spot is the wooden bridge. You can see the water through it. It's not too high from the sea level, but if you have acrophobia, you may become shaky when standing on it. Yet, it's...  more »
