Godaido, Matsushima-machi
(3.1/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
Admire twelve Zodiac animal carvings on the wall of Godaido, a temple founded by a Tendai monk in 828 CE. The site depicts five wisdom kings of Japanese Buddhism. The temple opens its door only once every 33 years to display its sacred statues (it was last opened in 2006), so don't plan to go inside. Sitting on the small island, the free site has easy access by three walking bridges and features a souvenir shop nearby. Use our Matsushima-machi vacation trip planner to visit Godaido on your trip to Matsushima-machi, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

  • Going across the lovely Red Bridge is very nice. Watch below! Is the water. It is a small building.

  • This short walk over the bridge to this small island is a nice thing to do while visiting Matsushima. Interesting old building and a good place to take some photos of the bay
  • See the location of kanran Tei. Now I know the mark in red-painted bridge. Foot clearance is good. In width and surprising because instinctively feet through it feeling scared. Here are only in this temple on the other. Slowly turn takes time and pray and you can enjoy the views of Matsushima. Try Kenyans in the gracious living of the people in the past. Here is free of charge, but watch out for stairs and bridges to walk.
