Godaido, Matsushima-machi

(190 reviews on the web)
Historic Site
Admire twelve Zodiac animal carvings on the wall of Godaido, a temple founded by a Tendai monk in 828 CE. The site depicts five wisdom kings of Japanese Buddhism. The temple opens its door only once every 33 years to display its sacred statues (it was last opened in 2006), so don't plan to go inside. Sitting on the small island, the free site has easy access by three walking bridges and features a souvenir shop nearby.
