Nakamachi Street, Matsumoto

3.2
#2 of 8 in Neighborhoods in Nagano Prefecture
Neighborhood Tourist Spot
See some of the best-preserved examples of Edo-period architecture at Nakamachi Street. Aged more than a century, the street's warehouses are fireproof, with walls as thick as 30 cm (11.8 in). Today, the spaces accommodate restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops. After you enjoy a leisurely stroll or a bike ride down the street, make sure you stop by one of the area's eateries, where you can try traditional soba noodles made of buckle wheat. Where to stay in Matsumoto

Matsumoto strikes a balance between the old and the new in its accommodations, as it does with most other aspects of its urban design and culture. The area directly around the main train station houses many of the newer options in town, including some large hotels, both basic and luxury, and a couple of smaller, family-run options. The more historic area north of here has hotels and "ryokan" (guesthouses) with a little more history and character, and with the main attractions of the old town on their doorsteps. The surrounding rural area features a number of hotels with "onsen" (traditional Japanese spas) and campsites.

  • Very pleasant on a sunny afternoon, a nice walk from the shopping centre to the river. There is a sacred well to look out for along the way  more »
  • This street is worth a visit if you are in Matsumoto. There are many restaurants and shops on this street. It is close to the castle so it is a good place to go for lunch after visiting the castle.  more »
