Kaichi School Museum, Matsumoto

4.0
#2 of 12 in Historic Sites in Matsumoto
Learn about the Japanese education system at Kaichi School Museum, one of the country’s first schools. Inside the school-turned-museum, you can view various educational materials, stretching from the institution's establishment in 1873 until now. The museum is housed in a two-story Western-style building featuring elements of Japanese architecture. Its Western architectural influences come in the form of its second-floor balcony, decorated pillars, and its white plaster walls. The building’s central octagonal tower and carvings of dragons represent the Asian influence in the building’s design. About 70% of its construction costs were covered by donations from local townsfolk. Make Kaichi School Museum part of your personalized Matsumoto itinerary using our Matsumoto journey planner.

  • It is incorporating Western architecture in the Meiji era, and made building. Sculpture angels or Dragon? Or, it is a strange feeling. Said Carpenter made himself great. It was moved, so was another original. Recently I sister and Ehime kaimei elementary school building on there often exhibit relationships. Old elementary school level was in, and talking with the daughter, and watching the article at that time was very good. 300 yen entry fee is not high.

  • Good place to spend an hour while in Matsumoto - it's only a short walk away from the Castle. The school is darling and has original desks and educational books.
  • Old school building that has been preserved vey well. Most exhibition items are around the school and descriptions are all in Japanese. A bit dull in my opinion.
  • Historic school building
  • Interesting building and exhibits. Very limited English explanations on exhibits.
  • Good

Where to stay in Matsumoto

Matsumoto strikes a balance between the old and the new in its accommodations, as it does with most other aspects of its urban design and culture. The area directly around the main train station houses many of the newer options in town, including some large hotels, both basic and luxury, and a couple of smaller, family-run options. The more historic area north of here has hotels and "ryokan" (guesthouses) with a little more history and character, and with the main attractions of the old town on their doorsteps. The surrounding rural area features a number of hotels with "onsen" (traditional Japanese spas) and campsites.
