Shinjiko Lake, Matsue

Visit Shinjiko Lake, an impressive natural feature surrounded by plenty of attractions. The scenery of the lake and surrounding areas can be explored by land or water, with a number of cruise companies offering trips out onto the lake. With a circumference of 47 km (29 mi), the lake represents the seventh largest body of water in the country. A brackish lake where freshwater and saltwater blend together, the lake supports a diverse number of aquatic species, including whitebait, sea bass, eels, and shijimi shellfish. Head to one of the lakeside seafood restaurants to sample dishes made with what are commonly known as the "seven delicacies of Shinji-ko." Put Shinjiko Lake into our Matsue day trip website and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • On State Highway No. 9, facing the Lake Shinji. Lakeline (tour buses) would be in the evening, and stops also nearby. Could be because it was still daytime, sunset we didn't have, overlooking 嫁ケ island just around the corner.

  • When heading from Matsue in Izumo JR San-in line, route 9 runs North Shore 1 vineyard train, route 431 South. The highway rest area roadside rest areas and looks from the train. Twilight Sweden wind driving day marks the sunset here.

  • The sunset is beautiful in anyway. The best as the spot Gallery, bridge side. Weather permitting, sunset 30 minutes before is best. Taking a note to try a lot.

Where to stay in Matsue

With its canals, rivers, and lakes central to the look and everyday life of Matsue, many visitors arrive wanting a view of the water. And they're certainly in luck, because the city has placed its primary accommodations up close to the waterways. Traditional "ryokan" (guesthouses) with "onsen" (traditional Japanese spas) sit to the north of the river, while a good number of basic hotels lie to the south. Look around the countryside to the south for clusters of retreats in scenic areas, including traditional ryokan and modern hotels with onsite onsen.
