Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto

4.1
#16 of 347 in Historic Sites in Kyoto
Historic Site Religious Site
Founded in 656, Yasaka Shrine remains one of Kyoto's most popular shrines, especially appealing to tourists during the cherry blossom season. View the honden (the most sacred area of a Shinto shrine) and the oratory within the main hall before checking out the performance stage lined with hundreds of lanterns. In early April, when cherry blossoms are in bloom, the temple is especially busy, as it is during the summer festival of Gion Matsuri in July. Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.

  • Beautiful shrine to stroll through. Take a morning or afternoon to walk through the area, Gion street is just outside the shrine, and there are a lot of restaurants outside the shrine lining the river. If you are lucky, you may even see the samurai dog and his owner in the shrine playing music for tips! Super cute.
  • Very beautiful and peaceful shrine to start our day trip. after spending around 45 min here, there is only a short walk to Ninen-zaka (old Japanese street) and Sannen-zaka. After sanen-zaka, it leads directly to Kiyomizu-dera
  • Easy access. Free entry. Beautiful grounds. Worth a visit if your in the area
  • Nice lighting at night. Good access to Heian Shrine, and Gin-kakuji as well. May walking down via Gion to Kamogawa (river bank).
  • One of the land marks of Kyoto. Great place to stroll too before walking over to Kiyomizu-dera.
