Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto

4.1
Founded in 656, Yasaka Shrine remains one of Kyoto's most popular shrines, especially appealing to tourists during the cherry blossom season. View the honden (the most sacred area of a Shinto shrine) and the oratory within the main hall before checking out the performance stage lined with hundreds of lanterns. In early April, when cherry blossoms are in bloom, the temple is especially busy, as it is during the summer festival of Gion Matsuri in July. • It's good when the time 持te余shita in the Gion district. From a North-South midpoint of the tourist destinations of Higashiyama, go anywhere in the Higashiyama area. Higashiyama tourist a good starting point; Nanzen-JI was just around the corner.

  • A good shrine to visit at night. It beautiful to see the bulbs when the light up. Open 24hrs, hence can visit at midnight. Has a good eerie feeling. Its at the end of the beautiful market street.
  • One of the closest Shinto shrine to Shijo area, Kyoto's most bustling area. The shrine remains open till 6:00 pm and usually crowded. The safforn Color entrance is an attraction in itself. The wooden structure of the shrine is also beautiful. Even though not a must visit attraction in Kyoto, but if time allows, worth a visit.
  • A super touristy site where you'll mostly see people rather than views. The main attraction is a center shrine and bells. Only go if you're walking by (which you'll likely do since it's near the main restaurant and shopping area of Gion)
  • Located at the eastern end of Gion-Shijo street. Center of Gion-Matsuri festival. As it is free and located close to Gion area, which you'll most likely visit, there's no harm in coming in and have a quick look around before continuing your journey. Remember to be respectful and courteous around religious sites.
  • Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社) is well known for its summer festival, the Gion Matsuri, which is celebrated every July. Arguably the most famous festival in the whole country, the Gion Matsuri dates back over a thousand years and involves a procession with massive floats and hundreds of participants. The shrine also becomes busy during the cherry blossom season around early April, as the adjacent Maruyama Park is one of the most famous cherry blossom spots in Kyoto.

Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.
