Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto
(4/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
Founded in 656, Yasaka Shrine remains one of Kyoto's most popular shrines, especially appealing to tourists during the cherry blossom season. View the honden (the most sacred area of a Shinto shrine) and the oratory within the main hall before checking out the performance stage lined with hundreds of lanterns. In early April, when cherry blossoms are in bloom, the temple is especially busy, as it is during the summer festival of Gion Matsuri in July. • Again we have visited to this Shrine located at the centre of Gion where there were lots of people clustering around. There were many shopstalls selling different kinds of food and visitors were busy ...  more »
  • Recommended for those who don't have time to explore too much walk from kawaramachi, close to downtown and then slowly! Hills or stairs at least okay I left wearing heels!

  • This is the Yasaka Shrine, or also known as the Gion Shrine (located in Gion of course). From what I was told, the shrine was founded over 1300 years ago, and apparently is one of the most famous and important shrines in Japan. This shrine is central to the celebration of Gion Matsuri which is like one of the largest celebration with parades in the month of July. The shrine is brightly painted red, and is really attractive in the day time. In the front, is located 3 large brass bells with thick ropes for ringing. It's quite an experience just standing there and watching people ringing the bells. This place is also quite popular during the cherry blossom season with its proximity to Maruyama park.
  • Right at the end of the gion shopping street, This 24 hour shrine was great for night shots.
  • Beautiful shrine love the lanterns lit up in the evening Looks more beautiful during sunset I recommend an evening trip
  • Situated in the middle of Gion, It's a pretty shrine where many tourists dressed in kimono take their portraits. There's a vending machine selling Gion water which is not found anywhere else.
  • One of the many shrines. However this one is nice because it's in Gion, also known as Geisha district.
