Serene and ornate, Tofuku-ji Temple operates as a traditional Zen Buddhist shrine. Erected in 1236, the temple was accurately restored in the 15th century after a devastating fire destroyed much of its structure. The temple boasts a Japanese national treasure, an imposing two-storied gate considered one of the most beautiful examples of Buddhist temple gates. Look for the temple's intricate woodwork and extensive gardens, each of which is landscaped differently to symbolize images and themes in Zen Buddhism. • Beautiful old temples and gardens. We had an excellent guide with us. I'm not sure that it'd be as interesting without a guide. It's particularly colourful in Autumn. Today it rained and not too many ...  more »
  • Cherry blossoms? And, could slowly see the garden and views over the quiet this time of year is fall foliage season was disappointing but I tried (lol) thing is something else.

  • The gardens around the Hojo were beautiful. The subtemples are hard to find; Google Maps and Ulmon maps were of little help since they either had names in Japanese or did not name them at all. So, we ...  more »

  • Besides of Arashiyama, another popular spot for autumn leaves sightseeing is located at Tofukuji Temple. You can view the cheerful red maple leaves dancing in an oasis of serenity when the wind blows. But don't forget that this is one of the favorite tourist attractions too. So expect a lot of crowds. Try to get there before 10am.
  • Awesome autumn colours with the temple at the background. It has Nice garden too. Weekends will be very crowded better visit early morning as soon as the temple is opened
  • First time here and it's a lovely place for the autumn season. A bit crowded and it's unfortunate you have to pay separately to go into two different sections of the building (both ¥400 each). I only went into the main building and garden and you can see the bridge/corridor area from the garden. It's lovely!
  • There is little of interest here during winter / spring. Maybe good for autumn leaves.
  • It is said that this temple is one of the best place to see autumn leaves. Not only that, we also enjoyed the view from the veranda. It was very peaceful and beautiful
