Tofuku-ji Temple, Kyoto

4.4
#11 of 347 in Historic Sites in Kyoto
Serene and ornate, Tofuku-ji Temple operates as a traditional Zen Buddhist shrine. Erected in 1236, the temple was accurately restored in the 15th century after a devastating fire destroyed much of its structure. The temple boasts a Japanese national treasure, an imposing two-storied gate considered one of the most beautiful examples of Buddhist temple gates. Look for the temple's intricate woodwork and extensive gardens, each of which is landscaped differently to symbolize images and themes in Zen Buddhism. It was visited in foliage season. The leaves are very beautiful and the locals rather than foreign tourists Japan's many places. Not very crowded ferries tourists and do good.

Awesome temple with much fewer people than other Kyoto temples. It had the most awesome Japanese maple valley. Also has some great more modern zen gardens. Well worth the visit

Serene atmosphere... 400 yen for the gardens and Shinto shrine. Garden view you can enjoy from outside bridge too without paying for.

Two parts; two fees; both worth the money! The rock garden was special. Less people was a bonus.

The temple was beautiful especially the garden, but the staff at this temple are incredibly rude. I hope it was just a bad day, because they were yelling and rushing you along, and that very quickly ruins your zen/temple experience.

Beautiful temple, the sheer size of it is impressive and the area around the actual temple is wonderful. Not too busy.

Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.
