Shosei-en Garden, Kyoto

4.4
#16 of 66 in Parks in Kyoto
Quiet and peaceful despite its city-center location, Shosei-en Garden provides a photogenic oasis of tranquility featuring an attractive lake, trees, and flowers. Dating back to the 9th century, but with its present layout designed in 1641, the garden's meandering paths take you to a number former tea houses set in different areas. The well-kept garden features a pond brimming with carp and green turtles, while blue herons nest in tree branches overhead. Not far from the Buddhist Higashi Honganji Temple to which it belongs, the garden sits only 10 minutes by foot from Kyoto's central train station. Some meters further from the Higashi Honganji Temple, is the Shoseien Park. In Hiroshima, we walked through the fantastic Shukkeien Park (mega!), we expected something similar. The entrance fee was 500 yen, a proud price we got but a large, thick glossy brochure in which the Park is described and were good things. Hardly inside, we realized that this is nothing. The park looks very uncared for Japanese conditions, a bridge is in renovation and not usable (no information how long), and the pond was more a pond (no water, much green algae, no Koi, many thousand mosquitoes), leaves were everywhere (I know in the fall This is actually normal, but who has visited other temples and gardens in Japan, know that this seems 'scruffy'). It was a shame this park to see its potential is not used at all. Since the money was probably put in the brochure instead of the park itself. Very bad. In the spring beautifully...

Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.
