It is the members of a Japanese Buddhist sect mausoleum. There is also a modern Hall for the victims of the second world war. If one follows the side road leads through the crematorium and cemetery which at the end of its journey up leads to Kiyomizu.

Very beautiful temple. During the time i visited, the surrounding grounds were very green and lush. The blossoms were still in bloom and the area was so beautiful.

Otani Honbyo ( also known as Nishi Otani ) is a large mausoleum combined with a temple built on a large area of Higashiyama Gojo. The place belongs to Honganji Temple of . The temple belongs to Jodo Shinshu ( True Pure Land Buddhism ) sect of Buddhism and it is said to hold the cremated remains of Shinran who is the founder of Jodo Shinshu. The cemetary ground on the north side of this temple is the biggest size in Kyoto which extends all the way up to Kiyomizu Temple located up on the top. You can get direct access to Kiyomizu Temple from the grave yard of Otani Honbyo by keep going up on the slope. You can take your bicycle up the hill. ( Trans-word+ : TGM Kyoto Guide )

Happen to accidentally discover this temple. It looks grand so me and hubby check it out. Not touristy, all locals here. It is very beautiful. Then onwards, when we visited Kyoto, we definitely stop by this temple and walk via the back road to the cemetery going up to Kiyomizu-dera

Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.
