Kyoto Station Building, Kyoto

4.2
#1 of 124 in Shopping in Kyoto
Built in a futuristic style to commemorate the city's 1200th birthday, Kyoto Station Building serves as one of the country's main transportation hubs. Though Kyoto remains best known for its traditional architecture, this high-tech attraction designed by Hara Hiroshi stands out as a clear deviation from that style. As you walk through the station, take note of the steel-beamed roof, aptly dubbed "The Matrix." Beyond the well-known architecture, this station serves a practical purpose, providing millions of locals and tourists with not only access to major transport lines, but also shopping mall, movie theater, hotel, and numerous local government offices. Our Kyoto trip planner makes visiting Kyoto Station Building and other Kyoto attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • We where getting towards the end of our time in Japan and had covered over 2,000 miles by train using our JR Pass so, this was now just another station for us. Like all other stations in Japan it is w...  more »
  • That's where the public garden designed by architects Umeda! and the accuracy of the signs is a pity. Here's an unusual way to Sky Garden stairs ~ just watch your Sky guard had no apparent in ~

  • Kyoto bus and train terminal. The building is a very modern architectural line, on 4 floors, with an incredible view of the city at the top. It boasts a number of restaurants and shops, and even a small mall with the best brands of Japanese clothing. It has it all.

  • This building is a station, a huge mall, and an architectural feat all wrapped up in one beautiful package. At the top of this tall building, there are windows where you can see all of Kyoto. If you're touring around Japan and arriving through the station, take a few minutes to check out the breathtaking view from the top. You won't be disappointed!
  • Awesome structure on north side. You must do the sky walkway and the roof garden / terrace. See lightshow on the stairs by the escalator that leads up. Indide these c15 floors are great restaurants and noodle / uden bars and floors of retail shops. More shops and food places below ground level too. You can spend several hours exploring.
  • This is the best and most elegant train station I have seen in all of Japan (and I've been to stations from Sapporo down to Fukuoka). The way it is designed is so open and inviting. If you go to the roof, you can see quite a bit of Kyoto (it's dark at night, so it seems couple's like to go there! 😂)
  • One of the most amazing buildings in Japan, and one of the most amazing train stations in the world. You can find everything here and the views are amazing. You can spend all day exploring just the outer walkways.
  • A comprehensive transport hub. Open air staircase that extends more than 10 floors up. Good view and nice place to sit around with friends at the stair case. There was a humongous Christmas tree for 2017. Try the ramen street at 10th floor.

Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.
