Kyoto Station Building, Kyoto

4.2
#1 of 127 in Shopping in Kyoto
Built in a futuristic style to commemorate the city's 1200th birthday, Kyoto Station Building serves as one of the country's main transportation hubs. Though Kyoto remains best known for its traditional architecture, this high-tech attraction designed by Hara Hiroshi stands out as a clear deviation from that style. As you walk through the station, take note of the steel-beamed roof, aptly dubbed "The Matrix." Beyond the well-known architecture, this station serves a practical purpose, providing millions of locals and tourists with not only access to major transport lines, but also shopping mall, movie theater, hotel, and numerous local government offices. Our Kyoto trip planner makes visiting Kyoto Station Building and other Kyoto attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Great info and stuff are very kind and helpful. Big clean station and easy to understand where you are going, signs and maps all place. There is 11 floors building with stores and restaurants and 2 floors down with store and restaurants. High peak season there are lots of stuff helping all the tourists, most of them know basic English. Welcome to Kyoto.....
  • There's a good tonkatsu restaurant at the very top of the escalators. Neat view of the building going up and down and a garden with viewing windows. Lots of stores and restaurants available to choose from. Nice flow through the station and clear directions to each platform and the malls that flank the sides.
  • Very crowded, but they sell almost everything. If you are headed home and are looking for some gifts or foods to bring back with you, I would recommend checking this place out. It has multiple floors, and tens of shops set up inside selling numerous confectioneries, foods, and baked goods.
  • We ate most of our meals while we were in Kyoto at the station. It wasn’t too far from where we were staying and it has every type of variation for food. The only thing is that it is so crowded and many times there are lines at every restaurant. Sometimes it was confusing trying to find where you were going. I loved the experience and everyone was so friendly.
  • Very bustling place as it is the main station in Kyoto. If you are a fan of unique, modern and grand architecture, this is a place to go. They also have lots of restaurants to fill your stomach!
