A visit to Kyoto would not be complete without experiencing Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art--one of the oldest art museums in Japan. Showcasing some 2,100 items, the museum includes both Western and Japanese paintings, as well as handicrafts, sculpture, prints, and calligraphy. In addition, it attracts many of the art world's highlights coming from Tokyo. The first floor often hosts free shows all year round, while the popular annual Kyo-ten exhibit boasts some of the best artists living and working in Kyoto.
