Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, Kyoto

4.3
#15 of 66 in Parks in Kyoto
An old imperial palace-turned-park, Kyoto Gyoen National Garden makes a good place for a long walk under trees in the midst of an ancient capital city. Several shrines scattered around the park provide a surprise factor for curious walkers strolling among cherry trees, magnolias, and plum trees in this well-kept area. Children can burn off steam in a playground with swings and sandboxes, while joggers and cyclists can exercise on gravel and grassy paths. You'll find public restrooms and vending machines across the park. Our Kyoto travel itinerary planner makes visiting Kyoto Gyoen National Garden and other Kyoto attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

Such a beautiful park to explore. I enjoyed meeting some of the locals walking their dogs here. The distinctive song of the cicada was everywhere!  more »

I went on the day of the sea. Anyway the hottest Word. Too wide to go into the shade is very. Also small kids and bad feet in the stroller is hard to go. I went at all imperial so taken for granted. In addition to season a good time to visit.

Best for walking and sightseeing. However, it would take more than four hours, if you want to explore the whole garden and imperial palace. No admission fee.

Nice public garden in the heart of kyoto. It is a popular place for local people too. It is really pleasant to walk in this park and see people enjoying this slow life.

loved the state guest house there, but, be aware, the Imperial Palace is closed to the public Mondays. Got caught out with that one!

Nice park to stroll around and walk the dog. Imperial Palace is here too.

Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.
