Kurama-dera Temple, Kyoto

4.5
Located in isolated wilderness high on a wooded mountain, Kurama-dera Temple represents a center of worship for an esoteric sect, revering deities of the sun, love, and power. Hike the steep path to the 8th-century temple (which will take around 30 minutes), enjoying the wind through the colossal cryptomeria trees and a Shinto shrine along the way. Alternatively, take the cable car halfway up. Soak in the peaceful atmosphere of this popular--yet untouristed--temple, and observe the forested valley from its terrace, set directly on a mountain slope. • A good planner would be to climb these steps for good exercise, then look around the whole temple. Afterwards, you can have a nice dip in the nearby hot spring spa.
  • I advice to do the all treck very early morning starting from around Kifune shrine and stop by the nice small boudhiste temple : ideal for meditation, high energy. Then finishing by Kurama dera: more tourists but nice view. This mountain is importante for Reiki therapeutes as Master Usui received his initiation there. Enjoy!
  • Splendid Buddhist Temple especially famous for its tiger guards! Away from the city center and accessible by local train. A very interesting side trip!
  • My type of place...lots of steps, stunning trees, water and landscapes. Absolutely beautiful.
  • It’s a long trip from Kyoto, the hike is good. Aside from that, not much special.

Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.
