Hosenin, Kyoto

4.6
#44 of 347 in Historic Sites in Kyoto
Historic Site Religious Site
For lovers of intricately designed gardens, Hosenin, a Buddhist temple backed by scenic mountains, provides a real treat. Enjoy a view of the frame garden while a monk prepares a complimentary cup of tea and a cake for you. Take a close-up view of a 700-year-old pine tree and admire a pond garden from several perspectives. You can stroll through a moss garden, a rock garden, and a bamboo grove, all the while looking out over the valley. Built in 1012 CE, this small, intimate temple is one of the five “bloody temples,” so named thanks to the bloodstained tiles on its ceiling. Wear warm clothing, especially socks, as you'll have to remove your shoes to enter. Plan your Hosenin visit and explore what else you can see and do in Kyoto using our Kyoto tour planner.

  • Go Ohara June tourist season off people very less time and to real Ohara out is fun to go by bus (580 yen) from Kyoto train station we meet! Look at this bus route map townscape in Kyoto, from I would regret not using the underground is absolutely wrong to go through and then from fact, Sanjo-Keihan station anymore without building on the ground and bounces around the Lake Biwa Canal, fresh bath the stream bed of the Kamo Kamo River parking lot watching the scenery from the left to head north, shops, old bus rattled the road jumps up while Ohara towards no from here et is to slip in the countryside from the city go up from demachiyanagi garden bridge, Kyosho keifuku electric railroad train under the River towards yase. Yase goes to Mt. Hiei Enryakuji Temple, is the cable car station is fairly shaded stream, cold pool with natural river water here in the old days it was really beautiful in the water! Is careful not to this mountain village followed by a mountainous road after yase Ohara and don't at the entrance of the village, DOI Shiba pickle honpo shops left was at first left hand too much real shop of pickled Eggplant and Red shiso leaves and salt pickles Shiba, cross the small bridge at this! and turn right to see so come on the bus go up the slope and is arriving in Ohara village say the village so small there is! Rice's rice paddies and fields, settlements gradually and views such as painted in the picture I.

  • Hosen-3000 hospital nearby. Walked in because it looks get going from the entrance to the lost, but the atmosphere was nice. With green tea is the admission fee of 800 yen. Was green tea, while slowly enjoying the garden, and was not doing the event nothing happened to be timing seems good. Green sparkly soothing to watch at the point where your garden. It seems to resemble pillars and frame frames garden. Recommend any that come up to 3000 hospital, another one foot stretched the.

  • An excellent garden/temple like what others have said below, PLUS a lesser-known gruesome past. Don't forget to checkout the ceiling's wooden planks when you are in the hall. Details of its tragic yet honorable past are entailed in the brochure and in a calligraphy frame (in Japanese) hang at the center of the temple hall. Its history will surely give you an unusual feeling on how you experience the seemingly serene ambiance.
  • Small temple but has fantastic garden. There is one side with a 700 year old pine tree and the other side is a magical garden. Definitely worth a visit.
  • Beautiful temple and very peaceful. The admission price includes a bowl of perfectly whisked matcha with sweets which you enjoy while sitting facing the 700 year old tree
  • I had great time here. Ticket is including matcha and mochi. Hosenin would makes you relax and comfortable.
  • I think here is better than SanJenIn, not crowded, and very calm, relaxed. Here also gives you a cookie and tea...

Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.
