Hosenin, Kyoto

4.5
For lovers of intricately designed gardens, Hosenin, a Buddhist temple backed by scenic mountains, provides a real treat. Enjoy a view of the frame garden while a monk prepares a complimentary cup of tea and a cake for you. Take a close-up view of a 700-year-old pine tree and admire a pond garden from several perspectives. You can stroll through a moss garden, a rock garden, and a bamboo grove, all the while looking out over the valley. Built in 1012 CE, this small, intimate temple is one of the five “bloody temples,” so named thanks to the bloodstained tiles on its ceiling. Wear warm clothing, especially socks, as you'll have to remove your shoes to enter. With our international travel planner, Kyoto attractions like Hosenin can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • And at the end of the alley followed from 3000 would not visit groups too much. So are relatively empty. Tea is 700 yen entrance fee is quite high. Staff here is really nice. Tea while looking out on the courtyard, I think obviously over 3000 hospital. Especially courtyard pine boosters in. Also, one more memorable is "blood ceiling". Mourn the soul is "Board" with the blood of those who fell on the fall of Fushimi Castle up to the ceiling, but the vividness to the heart was moved. For a while and then visited with a guide who will guide you through her blood ceiling was explained very hard. Also, such as toilet facilities is also very beautiful. Confident, is recommended.

  • Autumn is a season only in Japan. Many colors that make it even more beautiful temples, the trails, the villas. Here to Ohara the season comes first as a bit higher altitude than Kyoto. Each temple has its own priorities. You would like to visit and see everything, impossible. Therefore it is necessary to select and unfortunately dimenticre something. To Ohara maybe the selection you can do trying to discover the places less crowded.

  • Beautiful temple. Incredibly serene. If you have the chance, go in the Autumn (from November) for the night time showing. This I felt was the most spiritual of all the temples in the area.
  • Nice garden view, When it rains, It must be a perfect place! I love the experience in there =)
  • An excellent garden/temple like what others have said below, PLUS a lesser-known gruesome past. Don't forget to checkout the ceiling's wooden planks when you are in the hall. Details of its tragic yet honorable past are entailed in the brochure and in a calligraphy frame (in Japanese) hang at the center of the temple hall. Its history will surely give you an unusual feeling on how you experience the seemingly serene ambiance.
  • Small temple but has fantastic garden. There is one side with a 700 year old pine tree and the other side is a magical garden. Definitely worth a visit.
  • Beautiful temple and very peaceful. The admission price includes a bowl of perfectly whisked matcha with sweets which you enjoy while sitting facing the 700 year old tree
