Hosenin, Kyoto
(4.6/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
For lovers of intricately designed gardens, Hosenin, a Buddhist temple backed by scenic mountains, provides a real treat. Enjoy a view of the frame garden while a monk prepares a complimentary cup of tea and a cake for you. Take a close-up view of a 700-year-old pine tree and admire a pond garden from several perspectives. You can stroll through a moss garden, a rock garden, and a bamboo grove, all the while looking out over the valley. Built in 1012 CE, this small, intimate temple is one of the five “bloody temples,” so named thanks to the bloodstained tiles on its ceiling. Wear warm clothing, especially socks, as you'll have to remove your shoes to enter. Plan your Hosenin visit and explore what else you can see and do in Kyoto using our Kyoto tour planner.

  • I stopped by when I went to see the leaves in the Ohara School of 3000. Admission on green tea and teacake, was ¥ 800. The first little high 700-year old garden there was a pine was the value in sight. Recommended spot is tired of standard tourist!

  • Didn't have high hopes or lots more "temple energy" left when we arrived here but the temple is definitely worth a visit! The garden is simply peaceful and majestic. Really nice. The temple is nice bu...  more »
  • Ohara tourist to light up the night I stopped by. Just watching the manyo pine Moss was still a bit early in the autumn, but beautifully, the carefully manicured blue garden, over 700-year-old, healed my heart. Away but nice picture of bran, which that night still available per further out the atmosphere was. Is your garden at night all room are the hearth warms up and that can be helpful. It is a very aromatic incense yet, you can buy here!

  • Famous for an old tree, but the mixed dry rock and plant garden also attached was far more interesting, and seems to be a rare type, as far as I can tell after a holiday of temples.
  • Picturesque landscape of old garden, served with green tea and Japanese dessert. Very unique experience. Although, ticket price is quite high.
  • really nice
  • At 9:00 pm doors open just in time for the visit. After a few minutes alone while father and poses for a picture on white specializes in: three Japanese uncle. Picture sound sound of flowing water trickling through the Languedoc bamboo upset listening quietly to the garden courtyards? small sand; it was phrased like running water, sand, weaker compared to the size of the adjacent mountain Zen cause-and-effect; much smaller was better. No one thought that I'll be gone an hour. A real natural treasure specified by the Kyoto pine.

  • Frame garden green tea while overlooking that felt the sense of beauty of Kyoto. Guests can enjoy various pictures and ya splendor of pine and bamboo wind. Is coming to Ohara and not to go to the school of law spring. Suikinkutsu sounds nice.
