Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.

  • This shrine is located just beside Shisendo temple. If you visit Shisendo, Enkoji, or some other temples in Ichijoji, you can also visit it. (This is what I did.) There is a display of "sagarimatsu's ...  more »

  • Hachidai Shrine 八大神社 Next to Shisendo is Hachidai Shrine where Miyamoto Musashi had a big battle with a great samurai. Just go up the hill toward east is Tanukidani Fudo-in Temple. Going down the slope you will come to a place called Ichijyoji Kudari Matsu which is a place where Musashi made an arrangement of this battle under a pine tree. ( Kudari = go down + Matsu = pine tree ). Read this page for the detail.
  • While walking in Ichijoji, Kyoto, I came across this famous swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi! Miyamoto Musashi is one of Japan’s most iconic and legendary swordsmen, not to mention one of the best. Musashi fought with two swords in the way of the Ni-ten Ichi Ryu, and he was also famous for throwing his swords and sometimes even shuriken. He was the author of The Book of Five Rings, and in his lifetime from the time he was thirteen, fought 60 duels undefeated, not taking into account the men he took down during wars or battles. Musashi adopted three sons and died in his sixties of natural causes, kneeling with his sword in his left hand, a cane in his right.

  • Shrine dedicated to the Minamoto Musashi, which here should have at the same time fought against many enemies and won. He was supported at the victory from a tree, which he could have as protection in the back, so that no one could attack him from behind. The lower part of the stem is still so, and is venerated at the shrine.
