Daikaku-ji, Kyoto

4.4
One of the oldest temple complexes in Kyoto, Daikaku-ji consists of a variety of Buddhist shrines connected by elevated wooden walkways. Built on the grounds of a former imperial villa in the 800s, the temple has been the site of important political, religious, and cultural developments throughout its history. See the 1,200-year-old man-made pond, the oldest of its kind in Japan, which offers tranquility and raked gravel gardens. Once famous for its moon-viewing parties, which were atended by the royalty of the past, the temple now stages similar events for the general public during full moon. Treasures of the way around the building, located at the back is extra, knee circles are present here. • I was on the fence as to whether to see this place or Ryoan-ji. As luck would have it, I had the time for both. I was disappointed by Ryoan-ji, but absolutely loved Daikaku-ji. The temple was uncrowde...  more »

  • Favorite temple among all the ones we visited. Lots to see, the English audio guide was excellent, we would have probably missed the signifance of all the things we walked by had we chosen not to take it. Take the audio guide, it's a lot more interesting with it.
  • Intensely beautiful temple in the snow with very few tourists and lots of japanese pilgrims reciting the heart sutra and making their devotions. Hence a very touching atmosphere.
  • One of the best Shojin Riyoyi (vegan Budhidt food) in authentic temple
  • Nice place if you want to take a break from the more crowded arashiyama area (nice walk from there). Great atmosphere around the beautiful lake. Worth a stop if nearby!
  • Very well organised structure Various aspects will make you happy. You can feel many different feelings at here.

Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.
