Japanese Crane Reserve, Kushiro
(3.6/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
Get a close-up view of the magnificent birds that symbolize longevity in Japan at Japanese Crane Reserve, a sanctuary for endangered red-neck white cranes. Instrumental in increasing the number of these birds, the Kushiro National Park zoo built a fenced section providing a shelter and nursery for around a dozen free-ranging adult cranes roosting in large pens. Specially designed wire-free holes provide good opportunities to take photos as you look in at the cranes. You can take a bus from Kushiro airport or a train from Kushiro station to visit the reserve independently. However, on a guided tour, you'll increase your chance of seeing flocks flying and frolicking in their natural habitat. Keep your eyes peeled and you might just get to witness the cranes' attractive mating dance. Work out when and for how long to visit Japanese Crane Reserve and other Kushiro attractions using our handy Kushiro itinerary maker.

  • We paid 470 yen per person to view the crane which was a good encounter. The small museum was educational.
  • The story about a cranes life was interesting. This reserve allows them to leave but most stay. The mother and father stay together for life.
  • See crowned in the natural environment is difficult for tourists. While with the big fences in the Park has bred several crowned. Fence that encloses the ceiling is nothing without the blue sky. Some reason, not to run away. Fence helicopter Raven forces lots of jump aimed at feeding the cranes. Show the crowned what was somewhat poor.
