Akan Lake, Kushiro
(3.8/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
Formed by volcanic activities thousands of years ago, Akan Lake plays home to an unusual species of native algae that resemble large green spheres. Part of a national park, the lake draws plenty of visitors thanks to the waterside spa facilities at the nearby resort town of Akankohan. Hike around the lake on the network of walking trails to find several natural oddities, including bubbling mud pools. Alternatively, you can hop aboard a local boat tour to see the lake and the surrounding area from a different perspective.
