Navigate a trail that works its way beneath a thick, verdant canopy of ancient cedar trees on Seibu Trail. The trail cuts through Yakushima island, which features huge swathes of protected nature reserves, including a 18,958 ha (46,844 ac) UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. Being an unspoiled natural wonderland, the area around the trail abounds in wildlife, among which Yakushika deer and Yakushika monkeys roam and climb in great numbers. Make sure to bring your camera to capture photos of these distinctive animals, who generally don't mind by human attention. Popular among Japanese tourists, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho offers a variety of places to stay, ranging from budget lodgings to exclusive hotels. Dozens of hotels are equally distributed along the southern, eastern, and northern shores of the island, with a few deluxe options overlooking Tanegashima Straits. Camping is forbidden, but backpackers can find several small huts free of charge along the island's trails. Otherwise, you can stay in budget-oriented dormitories and private rooms on the island. You can also rent a self-catering cottage, ideal for a budget family stay.
