Jōmon Sugi, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho

4.5
#5 of 67 in Things to do in Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho
A Japanese cedar thousands of years old, Jōmon Sugi has been named a World Heritage Site. Standing at 1,280 m (4,200 ft) above sea level, it is also the largest tree on the island and is often a central part of a solid day's hike in the Yakushima Mountains. If trees could talk, this 30 m tall (100 ft) Jomon cedar would tell a history of the world since the Stone Age. Take a guess at its age--scientists believe it to be between 2,600 and 7,200 years old. Long way to walk, climb, come up here, but spent years and various preparations. Still, the thing is bigger and greater. The experience of a lifetime. You come up here and gave praise.

Went once 10 years ago, but tried again this year. Know in 50 years anniversary and the bus been found in Jomon cedar, happy. Starting the truck road, break 2. Second bathroom which begins with mountaineering. Yaku Cedar along the way with various animals and monkey encountered and moles. Form of trees are animals, so have fun during the fatigue. According to which Jomon Cedar staircase stairs continued until the yakusugi fatigue reaches a peak, but was impressed but the 2nd time. To shoot the photos were distant observation deck than last time, but this is great. Check it out once.

7/15/2017, participated in the Jomon Cedar trails. Weather sizzling at teriyaki sauce very hot. Put to rest and to 5:52 in the morning left the trailhead group by six from 15:30 back to the trailhead, and took 9 hours and 38 minutes. Rest and hydration was hectic. Bring a portable toilets are used. Walked in to take pictures along the way, so a bit more slowly paced, and thinking. When arriving at the Wilson co., Ltd. have taken heart-shaped was inspiring. Guide sent from "depends on how it's pictures of the heart" said, once inside the stumps and guide of the group, I from whats tell me I'm off at this angle. Jomon sugi is watching from the deck is touched. Said to rest on the deck a little walk back a little, eat your lunch in 10 minutes, was miffed. Other guides just boil water was behaving with miso soup, our guide, it is "car breakdown tools bring in no, I'm sorry-" was. I was looking forward to was a great disappointment. Is a powerful motivator for the food I am-was "Yaku Island way station of" eco-tour guide company. Guide it's habit "I take candy for hydration and salt supplementation or POCA said loudly from the police, fire brigade and then-" felt that the concerns of participants than worrying business.

Very nice trekking place with scenic beauty. A bit difficult in the upper part.

Always an unique opportunity to visit sometime that is 2000 + years old. The hike can be tough, however it's probably the same reason it managed to survive the timber industry.

It's a very long walk and you need to start very early. But it's more than worth it! There's a lot to see on the way to Jomon Sugi and the tree itself is impressive.
