Jōmon Sugi, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho

Landmark Tourist Spot
A Japanese cedar thousands of years old, Jōmon Sugi has been named a World Heritage Site. Standing at 1,280 m (4,200 ft) above sea level, it is also the largest tree on the island and is often a central part of a solid day's hike in the Yakushima Mountains. If trees could talk, this 30 m tall (100 ft) Jomon cedar would tell a history of the world since the Stone Age. Take a guess at its age--scientists believe it to be between 2,600 and 7,200 years old. • Such a beautiful walk in nature of Yakushima Island, Jōmon Sugi is still alive and deserve that you pay him a visit with your respects and love. Hiking is fun can be hard also, so bring lots of healthy snacks and water !
  • One of the most tiring but beautiful hikes. Totally worth it for the scenery and just left me in are being able to see such an ancient part of nature
  • Very nice trekking place with scenic beauty. A bit difficult in the upper part.
  • Always an unique opportunity to visit sometime that is 2000 + years old. The hike can be tough, however it's probably the same reason it managed to survive the timber industry.
  • It's a very long walk and you need to start very early. But it's more than worth it! There's a lot to see on the way to Jomon Sugi and the tree itself is impressive.
