Jōmon Sugi, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho

4.4/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web
A Japanese cedar thousands of years old, Jōmon Sugi has been named a World Heritage Site. Standing at 1,280 m (4,200 ft) above sea level, it is also the largest tree on the island and is often a central part of a solid day's hike in the Yakushima Mountains. If trees could talk, this 30 m tall (100 ft) Jomon cedar would tell a history of the world since the Stone Age. Take a guess at its age--scientists believe it to be between 2,600 and 7,200 years old. Take a look at our Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho travel itinerary maker to schedule your visit to Jōmon Sugi and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • 22 km, 10 hours. I think it has helped my back and forth real 8.5 hours and rest a bit more slowly while gone,. Dolly way lasts longer, then trail both, anyway hard. I think older people cannot walk, is suspicious. But the overwhelming presence of the Jomon cedar, horrendous. Impressed by its size even from a distance. Not specify the size of road passing by in addition, green beauty, trees, air, and getting tired. It is able to feel the greatness of the nature trails.

  • Found my love here in Yakushima. I fell in love with Yakushima's nature. Yakushima is known as a vortex (aka. power spot) and I felt strong healing power during my hike to Jomon Sugi Cedar. Jomon Sugi...  read more »
  • The Jomon sugi is a cedar and is located at 1200 metres altitude and is about 2000 to 7200 years old. She is regarded as a main attraction (for the Japanese) and is therefore much visited. E.g. on the Arakawa trail to get to this tree.

  • The tree itself... meh. I can't believe I woke up at 5am and hiked miles and miles to see that tree... BUT, the scenery along the way was amazing. I can understand why Hayao Miyazaki was so inspired by this island.
  • absolutely stunning. but getting there is hell. make sure you have the proper gear.....and for the love of all that is good in the world....wear good shoes
  • Went up mid November and there were only a few people. Camped at Shintakatsu. Recommend guided tour organiser Tabira. Awesome guide and amazing campfire food.
  • Morning from 5 am I went to the Jomon sugi. Trees that became the model for Princess Mononoke the shishigami and big and reach the Jomon cedar, visit, Wilson co., looks, from heart-shaped. Mean that you can rest on the way to Mt. Fuji mountain but not because I'm tired from-that there is an impression (^ ^)

  • Boned just crying to see go in a mood of trekking and climbing because their own boots required (recommend going much rent can be rented at the hotel, but you are a newbie, as one amateur). Each hotel offers mountain toy rental other morning breakfast will been for lunch. Arakawa trailhead, but from the most basic walkway of the Dolly track 2 hours, many pedestrian entrances warning plate Jomon sugi 2.5 hours (return is 1.5 hours from). → falls walk is quiet on a rainy day, but your feet, do not enjoy the scenery you can afford. Bottom line is now seeing only from the observation deck worth the penance of 10 hours and related costs, and is no longer questioned. From Arakawa trailhead until the Jomon sugi is outside mobile. Reference costs (2015.6) Yakushima-Kagoshima high speed boat one way 8, 800 yen Yakushima Island natural museum-Arakawa tozanguchi bus one way hire 870 Yen climbing Mountain shoes 1000 yen, rental rainwear 1000 yen
