Koyasan Danjo Garan, Koya-cho

4.6
Head to Koyasan Danjo Garan for a peaceful atmosphere in the midst of tall shady trees. Established in 816 CE, the shrine features about 20 temples, mostly reconstructions of the original buildings. Taking almost 70 years to complete from 816 CE, the complex’s oldest building, the great pagoda, has been destroyed five times, mostly by lightning strikes. Also find Kondo, which has been rebuilt six times due to being destroyed by fire during its history. It dates back to 819 CE and is used to host religious ceremonies. • Gave them a dozen times on Temple. Dunhuang and and I will fit the hand coloring is the lost of religion without. I think it is very cold in winter, cold air space, so come all over the world who are quietly pray want.

  • Seen in thick snow and bright orange really divine, was impressed. Was blue sky, raining snow in it, or believe in would have been nice.

  • Literally one step higher plateau full of plenty of temples and towers. Where Kobo Daishi was founded first as it seems. Most of them in the early modern exudes a serene atmosphere is restored. Visited snow shortly after went red and snowy contrast was beautiful.

  • We wandered around the surroundings. It was a thoroughly enchanting experience. The whole place showcases the majesty of both Japanese nature, traditions and history. The entire place is like a giant bonsai garden. I couldn’t stop taking pictures
  • Danjo Garan is a sacred complex and one of the most important area in Koyasan. Literally it means "garden for monks". I came here at a perfect time for fall foliage color in late October 2016. Entering the compkex from jabara michi was an amazing experience. It is lined with tall cedar, japanese rowan and maple trees with red color foliage along the way. The complex has some important cultural heritage wooden buildings. You will encounter the real japanese world in this place.
  • On the 16th of every month, monks gather at Sannoin building to do Houraku Rongi, a discussion of Buddhist doctrine. It was worth to see. Noted on wonder-tips.
  • Even on a normal day this was a pretty cool place. I came from Osaka and it was about a two hour one-way trip. You can get a Nankai Line day pass or 2 day pass as a foreigner and for 2000 yen approx, go all over the Wakayama Prefecture from Osaka. This day trip in particular was pretty great. The temples and shrines in Koyasan are really a neat sight to see. There are several English signs that explain the significance of landmarks, along with the UNESCO World Heritage sites that are in town. Also be sure to stop and get some Kochi from one of the local vendors. Overall this was a pretty great day trip that ended up costing no more that $50 for two people.
  • Beautiful architecture, history. Come on New Year's Eve to experience a bit of spiritual syncretism — they perform a Shinto fire ritual involving the carrying of a giant torch around the temple grounds. Sit, wander the nearby garden grounds. A must visit.
