Where to stay in Kotohira-cho

Accommodation in Kotohira-cho is plentiful due to the influx of tourists visiting the famous shrine, so you can choose from a number of hotels and traditional "ryokan" guesthouses, mostly concentrated near the shrine and the "onsen" hot spring resort. Both Western-style and "tatami" floor rooms can be found, or, if you don't wish to stay in town, you can take up lodging in nearby Takamatsu or in Okayama and take a day trip from there.

  • See a bunch of great temples, climb over 1000 steps and be awarded with a great view at the end. Very satisfying and slightly demanding walk.
  • You need strong legs and stamina to climb all the way up to the top of this shrine. Well worth it at the end. The views are spectacular
  • Travel light and be prepared to walk a lot of stairways if you want to climb to the top. The scenery is great up at the temple.
  • Great view and also a good exercise up the steps
  • Free entry, great atmosphere, and extremely old and detailed shrine structures make this a most visit while in the region. Be prepared to climb up a thousand steps to reach the summit. A variety of touristy shops and onsen in the area, but we didn't get to explore those as we arrived late in the evening. The surrounding shops close at around 5pm.
