Climb the 785 steps to Kompira-gu Shrine, an ancient Shinto worship spot and popular pilgrimage destination. The strenuous uphill ascent attracts many Shinto devotees, who come to pay their respects to the spirit that protects sailors and fishermen. On the way up you'll encounter a variety of stores selling local delicacies and souvenirs. From the main shrine, situated halfway up Mount Zouzu, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the lush green surroundings, or you can continue to ascend 500 more steps to the inner shrine.   • Certainly all of the shops on both sides of the steps up to the shrine are laden with shops - they are actually quite fun to have a look at. Or you can just enjoy the long walk up!  more »
